NEW NEARCTIC SPIDER MITES OF THE FAMILY TETRANYCHIDAE.

Interest in the
taxonomy
of the spider mites (Tetranychidae) in the United States has been increased during the lastfew
years for several reasons: First, because of the realization of their great economic importance; second, because of the danger of introducingmany
of themost
injurious exotic species; and, third, because ofthe difficulty found in determining correctly themost common
of our species. Following the earlierwork
ofBanks and
the laterwork
of the present writer,McGregor
undertook a systematic review of theAmerican
species,and examined more
critically thanhad
beendone
before those characterswhich
alone are of real specific value.As
a result of his investigations severalmooted
questions in regard tosynonymy have
been cleared up.Yet
the task of revision has inno way
been completed, for oneis constantly findingnew
charactersand new
differenceswhich
change previousjudgments
in regard tomany
points.New
species also existwithinour borders,and
foreign ones are constantly beingbrought to our shores.Hence
thepresent writer has again takenup
the difficult task of taxonomic investiga- tion of the different species,and
as a result of thiswork
here offers the description of eightnew
species.Genus
OLIGONYCHUS
Berlese.The
genus Oligonychus Berlese (1886) is basedupon
a species represented as having the tarsi each provided, in addition to the tenent hairs, with a simple clawand
a deflexed plumose, claw-like structure. This type of tarsal armaturemust
be very rare in the spidermites, for recent workershave dropped
thegenus Oligonychus because theyknew
ofno
species having the tarsal appendages of the typeshown by
Berlese.During
thelastyearthewriterhasobservedtwo
species with a deflexed, plumose, claw-likeappendage
to each trasus. These species alsoshow
other characterswhich
alliesthem
with the type species of Oligonychus.They

Legs moderate; anterior pair exceeding the palpi

Genus
BRYOBIA
Koch.Two
species of this genus, B. pratensisGarman and
B. pallidaGarman, have
been described in the past asnew from
the United States.The
description of B. pallidawas
soon recognized as being basedon immature
individuals of B. pratensis; but formany
years inthis country thename,
B. pratensis, has beenheld valid, being the scientific designation of ourcommon brown
mite, or so-called clover mite. Prior to the year 1911 the present writer sent a specimen of B. pratensis to Dr. A. C.Oudemans,
the notedDutch
acarologist, for comparison withEuropean
forms.As
a result of his comparisons he decided that our B. pratensiswas
only asynonym
of B. cristataDuges. This is the
synonymy which
he gives in a printed article published in thesame
year.In 1914 Ivar Triigardh, a Swedish authority, published the results of his extended taxonomic study of the genus Bryobia. In his English
summary
hegives the following pertinentstatementinregard tosynonymy
in the genusAll thedifferent species described by Koch, G. Canestrini, F. Fanzago, Berlese, Thomas, and Garman under the name of praetiosa, speciosa, nobilis, gloriosa, ribis,
andpratensis, mustbereferred to praetiosaKoch, beingmerevariationsanddifferent instars ofthatspecies.
Triigardhforthefirsttime ascertained the variations
due
togrowth
in the old species of
Koch,
aswell as the individual variations found inthe adultsof thesame
species;and
as a result of this has not only givenus his very valuable list ofsynonyms,
but hasshown
towhat
extent one candepend upon
such variable characters asmust be
used in specific diagnosis.For
the present it appears it is better to confine all descriptions ofnew
species to adult, egg-bearing females.The
variations,which
are very great in the genus,must
beworked
outlater forthe different species.There has accumulated in the United States National
Museum
a largenumber (many
hundreds) ofBryobia specimensfrom
almost allparts of the United States.
A
survey of this material shows, after eliminating variations due togrowth by
confining examinations exclusively to adult females,and
aftermaking
all due allowancesfor individual variations notedby
Triigardh, that one can recognize at least three forms here.One
of these, thecommon brown
mite, B.praetiosa, is distributed over
most
of the countryand
appears to be the only species found east of the Mississippi River. Beisdes thisform
there occurs in the west anotherand
in the southwest a third.The
differencesbetween

fully equal in length to one-half the length of cephalo thorax; inner tubercles but slightly surpassing the outer, separatedfrom
the latterby
emarginationswhich
extend almosttothebaseoftheplate,and
bearingscalesconsiderably smaller thanthoseoftheoutertubercles. (Thereismuch
variationinthesize ofthese innertubercles,and
the tubercleon onesidemay
bedecidedly larger than its fellow on the otherside, also the emarginationsmay
entirely separate the outer tubercles
from
the inner.) Mandibular plateaboutthree-fifthsasbroadaslongand
broadest atthebase, nar- rowly rounded in front,and
without frontal emargination except in rare instances.Abdomen

while in S. cardinalis the claw is so reduced as to be almostesvtigial. Specimens were taken
