Antenna1 about as long as head and anterior segment 1 combined, about % as long as antenna2; first node large, second and third nodes very short; flagellum about as long as peduncle, consisting of 17 nodes; accessory flagellum }^ as long as the primary and consisting of 9-10 nodes. Antenna 1, first node longer than second, which is about 5 times longer than third; flagellum longer than peduncle and composed of about 25 nodes. Antennae 2, third node about Yz to fourth, which is about as long as fifth; flagellum .. a little more than ){ fifth peduncular node long, consisting of about 11 nodes, the first of which nearly as long as the remaining nodes combined.
Pereopods 4 and 5 strong; second connection widely extended; fourth joint large, broadly expanded with posterior margin just beyond the end of the fifth joint. Antenna 2, third link almost as long as the fourth, which is almost as long as the fifth; flagellum about % length of. 1 about i body length, stipe quite stout, first joint longer than second and third combined, flagellum shorter than stipe and composed of 10 or 11 joints, each bearing sensory filaments on the lower distal corner.
Mandible, cutting edge and accessory plate dentate, 7-8 spines in the spine, palp small, consisting of a basal joint carrying the lateral spine, and a smaller conical second joint carrying the apical spine (fig. id). Pereopod 4, second joint linear; the fourth joint is expanded and the lower posterior corner reaches about the middle of the fifth joint; fifth connection shorter than sixth; seventh connection greater than % length of the sixth. Head shorter than the first two body segments combined; lateral lobes quite prominent, evenly rounded; eye not visible.
Right lower jaw with fairly wide serrated cutting edge; accessory plate consisting of four knob-like spines, the upper one being the widest and the lower one the narrowest (Fig. 5d); spine row with about 18 rather bluntly curved spines; choose absent; palp 1-articulated, provided with 4 terminal and 3 lateral spines (fig. 5c), Maxilla 1, inner plate lost during dissection; outer plate with 6 large teeth, 1 small tooth; palp 1-broken, oblique distal end armed with 13 terminal teeth and a row of submarginal setae.

Uropod 3, peduncle armed with a row of short spines on upper outer margin; first node of ramus with 1 median spine, 1 distal. Her specimen, apparently a female, was only 4 mm., but the present specimen, apparently a male, measures 13 mm. Moreover, more abundant material will probably decide the matter, but for the present it seems best to regard them as distinct species.

2 large (Fig. 6c); the palm is very oblique, defined by a strong sharp tooth, with a large tooth in the middle, on either side of which are small teeth; 6/0- Telson narrowly oval with a narrowly rounded tip and bearing 3 short spines on both lateral margins. Eyes reddish-brown in alcohol, oblong, about )i as long as the head, united above, and occupying nearly the whole front of the head.

Coxal plates 1–4 about twice as deep as their respective body segments; first produced forward with lower front corner squared. Telson boat-shaped, broadly oval, slightly longer than wide, posterior margin evenly rounded, reaching about middle of peduncle on uropod 3 and bearing spinule on both lateral margins. Sympleustes quadridens Bulycheva (1955) also has 4 dorsal teeth, but its gnathopods are slender, poorly subchelate, and have elongated fifth joints.
It is the only other species with dorsal teeth assigned to the genus "Sympleustes^" by Barnard and Given.

Stilipes was described by Holmes from San Nicolas Island near southern California, and he created the family Stilipedidae to accommodate it. Cacao sanguineus Hurley (1954, p. 803), from the south-east coast of New Zealand, now becomes Stilipes sanguineus (Hurley). Barnard placed the Cacao in the family Tironidae with some reservations, but disagrees with that family in some of its characters.
The swollen oval area at the lower front end of the head represents the eye, but no visual element can be discerned, as the animal has been so long in alcohol.

Mandible with elongated anterior part; the most modern rather narrow with blunt teeth; the extra panel is nowhere near top-notch; spine consisting of a close cluster of 4-5 short strong spines; molar strong, convex, located approximately in the middle of the mandible, triturated surface narrow; the palp is located opposite the molar, the joint is shorter than the other. 1 extends slightly longer than 2 and uropod 3 slightly longer than 1; the outer part of all uropods is slightly shorter than the inner part. Telson extending well beyond peduncle of uropod 3, about as wide as long, slightly expanded distally, bearing a shallow triangular depression separating 2 rounded lobes bearing a few minute spinules.

All males and the smaller females are much less spiny than the large females. The specimens Gurjanova studied were taken east of Sturup Island, the northernmost of the Kuril Islands. The specimens taken by the steamer Albatross came from the Bering Sea and the vicinity of Otter Island, the westernmost of the Aleutian Islands.

Gnathopod 2, second joint longer than sixth; fifth joint almost as long and above the sixth; six % as wide as long, palm not as oblique as gnathopod 1, passing into posterior margin of joint with a short curve, armed on outer margin with 7 blunt teeth extending straight down posterior margin of joint; seventh joint not so strongly curved as gnathopod 1, nail occupying about ji of its length. The second and third urosomal segments have dorsally on each side a very small ridge armed with spines. Uropod 3, outer 1-jointed ramus about 3K times longer than stem; inner ramus only about ji as long as outer ramus (Fig. 131).
Telson reaching to end of peduncle of lu-opod 3, about as wide, cleft about % its length, lobes dehiscent, each armed apically with spine and several plumose setae (fig. 13m).
