PubMed Search Criteria
PubMed was searched by combining four separate queries. The first query, pertaining to the outcome of interest, was searched using the following terms: “(mortality) OR (coronary heart disease AND incidence) OR (cardiovascular disease AND incidence) OR (ischemic heart disease AND incidence) OR (diabetes AND incidence).” The second query, designed to identify studies considering obesity as a cumulative or life course process, was searched using the following terms: “((obesity) AND (duration OR history OR histories OR trajectory OR trajectories OR cumulative OR lifetime OR lifecourse) OR (weight AND gain) OR (weight AND change)).” The remaining two queries were included to further refine the search to studies focusing on obesity as a cumulative process. The third query was searched using the terms: “(adolescence OR
adolescent OR youth OR young OR early life)”. The fourth and final query was searched using the terms: “(adult OR middle aged OR middle-aged OR midlife OR mid-life).”
