The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of boggle board game on the students' vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Metro. Thus, there is a significant difference in students' learning results at the experimental class that used a board game for treatment. It can be concluded that Boggle Board Game has a positive and significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery in eighth grade of SMPN 10 Metro.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh permainan boggle board terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VIII SMPN 10 Metro. Dengan demikian, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan hasil belajar siswa pada kelas eksperimen yang menggunakan permainan papan boggle. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa permainan boggle board berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VIII SMPN 10 Meto.

It states that this university thesis is primarily the result of the researcher's research, with the exception of some parts that are expected from the bibliography mentioned. This undergraduate thesis is submitted as a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd) in the Department of English Education entitled: “THE EFFECT OF THE BOGGLE GAME ON THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF DATA MASTERY STUDENTS OCTOBER MASTERS" . Dedi Irwansyah, M.Hum, and co-sponsor Andianto, M.Pd, who have sincerely guided the writer to accomplish this university thesis on time.

Background of Study

Vocabulary mastery is important for students because it is one of the basic components and plays an important role in the four language skills. The minimum mastery criteria (MMC) for English was 70.00, and based on the data it can be concluded that the mastery of eighth grade vocabulary in SMPN 10 Metro is unsatisfactory. By playing the boggle board game, students can remember that the vocabulary will be longer and also help effectively to achieve the learning objectives.

The students who have enough vocabulary are not difficult to understand the meaning of words. So they have to find problems to understand and remember the meaning of vocabulary, and they think English is one of the difficult subjects. So, the more vocabulary the students have, the greater possibility of having a skill to use the language.

From the problem above, the researcher finds that most of the students of SMP N 10 Metro have problems in studying English because they have limited vocabulary.

Benefits of the study a. For the students

Boggle board game can make students enjoy and interest in English learning process and improve students' vocabulary mastery. This research can be used as information, especially about the process of learning vocabulary through boggle board games. The result of this research can be used as information material and provides a real contribution of knowledge to learning English, especially in vocabulary.

Prior Research

This research took two classes as the subject of this study which were experimental class and controlled class to compare the pre-test score before giving treatment and after giving the treatment. The result of achieved score of post-test in the experimental class was 6.59 and for the controlled class was 1.729. It can be concluded that there is any significant influence of the use of scribble game towards students' vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMP PGRI Batanghari East Lampung.4.

Based on both study above, the researcher can conclude that games have the great effect for the students' vocabulary on the teaching and learning process. So that vocabulary mastery can help the students to speak, listen, read and write well. Brewster states that "the student's mastery of vocabulary includes many indicators, there are form, pronunciation, word meaning and usage."8 Form focuses on spelling, grammatical description and the grammatical changes that can be made in good sentences. Passive vocabulary is the total portion of vocabulary acquired through a learner's listening and reading.9 Thus, passive vocabulary is the word learners get through listening or reading.

It is one of the teacher's duties to gradually increase the student's passive vocabulary so that students can read and understand the topics that other people are talking about. Active vocabulary consists of words that can be used accurately in speaking and writing, passive vocabulary will always be larger than active because students will mark a word that does not need to be used.10 Active vocabulary actually came from passive vocabulary. When teaching vocabulary, the teacher must determine which vocabulary to teach or which vocabulary the students must learn first.

It is clear that not all words and expressions in the target language can be learned at the same time and not all students are of a certain level. By using technology and media, students will be interested in learning English subject and also master the vocabulary. Students will not be interested in studying English because the vocabulary is limited, every single word is unknown to the students.

Hypothesis Formulation

Additionally, the boggle game is one in which the goal is to find the Boggle words on a Boggle board. Ho: there is no positive and significant influence of using boggle board game on vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Metro. Ha: there is a positive and significant impact of using the boggle board game on the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Metro.

Observation is an important component in any scientific investigation within the context of science, observation simply means observing the world around us to get ideas for research.28 Observation also refers to the method of making careful and accurate measurements, which is the distinguishing feature of a well-conducted research project. The observation is about the vocabulary mastery result for the pre-test and post-test of SMPN 10 Metro. The test was in written form giving students multiple choices consisting of 4 options.

The questions given during the post-test have the same indicators as the pre-test. However, in the post-test, the researcher used Google form (the address is https://forms.gle/HbV7zJYBbvoRdCzC7) and video calls.

The researcher used SPSS version 20 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) to process the data in normality test.

Hypothetical Test

Ho : The board game Boggle is not effective in teaching vocabulary mastery in the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Metro. Ha: The board game Boggle is effective in teaching vocabulary mastery in the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Metro.

Then the researcher gave the students time to search vocabulary by group (each group includes 3 students). After they finished this game, the researcher asked the students to name the word and also searched for the meaning. Then the researcher and the students discussed together, after which the researcher gave the students the opportunity to ask if they had difficulty.

After that, the researcher told the students to search vocabulary through the game like the first and second treatment. The students seemed interesting in the teaching learning process, they enjoyed the process of searching for the words. The minimum mastery criteria (MMC) for English was 70.00, and based on data above all the students passed tests.

The researcher tested normality test after getting the scores of the students in vocabulary mastery pre-test and post-test using SPSS version 20. It showed that the students' post-test score was greater than the students' pre-test. It is concerned about the effectiveness of using boggle board games on students' vocabulary mastery.

More precisely, through the board game Boggle as an alternative game, the students learned to master the vocabulary when learning English. More precisely, there is a positive and significant influence of the use of the Boggle board game on the students' vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The fact showed that there was a change in the number of students who received lower scores.

Finally, the boggle board game could be a solution for teaching the learning process, especially in vocabulary mastery, because it made students more interested and active during learning. Pupils have fun with the game, because in the board game boggle, a group can be formed and they can work together.
