To reveal the patient's characteristics, Joshi used DSM or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual as the starting point for this study. Edney believes that the media crowd highlights the negative attitudes of people with mental illness. Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Freudian psychoanalytic is used by the researcher to analyze the psychological problems of the characters.
The element of Id is the deepest and most basic part of man's personality. Therefore, the researcher will use the Freudian Psychoanalytic to analyze the behavior of the villain characters in Disney's movies. Thus Sigmund Freud brought the process of the psychoanalytic process to films in the 19th century.
Heinz Kohut believes that narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD, is the result of a developmental arrest in the normal psychological growth of people. Thus, the core symptoms will use the symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). To be diagnosed as suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a person must experience the number of symptoms one to four, and experience at least two symptoms from number 5, as explained above.
CHAPTER THREE METHOD OF RESEARCH
Research Design
Data and Data Resources
Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia the researcher made a draw to determine which movies will be used in this research, in which the villain characters chosen in the two chosen movies should represent the male and female characters. So the researcher finally found two movies which are Cinderella released in 2015 and Aladdin released in 2019. The researcher used library research to collect and collect the information related to the topic and object of the research.
The primary data sources are Cinderella movie (2015) produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Aladdin movie (2019) produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Rideback and Marc Platt Productions. From the movies, the researcher took the movie scenes and scripts as a source to analyze the existence of MN. The script was used to facilitate the researcher in writing the characters' sentences and dialogues.
Meanwhile, the secondary data sources are the material related to Disney, malignant narcissism, and the film's portrayal of mental illness.
Data Collecting Technique
Data Analyzing Technique
18. Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Cinderella and Aladdin movie; 2) Collect all the important data on the subject of the study from the movie scenes and script; 3) Collect all the data collected; 4) Classify and determine the data collected into various parts or groups; 5) Implement the theory used to see the relevance of the data collected; 6) Arrange, correlate and develop the data collected with the theory used to answer the research question. In this chapter, the researcher shows the analysis of Malignant Narcissism in the villain characters of two Disney movies; Cinderella's stepmother in Cinderella (2015) and Jafar in Aladdin (2019). There are movie scenes and movie scripts taken from the movies based on the characteristics of malignant narcissism according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
In order to reveal the characteristics of malignant narcissism, the researcher analyzed every detail of the movie, especially the dialogues, narratives, events, emotions and actions of the characters, and the researcher further relates it to the applied theory. Besides malignant narcissism, the characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder or NPD as the basic foundational concept of malignant narcissism are also important to be discussed first before revealing more about the malignant narcissism found in two Disney movie characters, Jafar in the Aladdin movie ( 2019) ) and Cinderella's stepmother in Cinderella movie (2015).
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
- Sense of Self-importance and/or Uniqueness
- Fantasize about Unlimited Power, Brilliance, Beauty, or Ideal Life
- Feelings of Anger
- The Person Requires Admiration and Attention Constantly
- Disturbance in Personal Life
Her very importance and uniqueness was first described by the film's narrator at minute 09.49, as it says: "Her future stepmother was a woman of keen sense and refined taste. One sees his first desire to be powerful . through the scene at minute 01.42.02 shown through dialogues: "Gin. It is proven in the minute confession of Ella's stepmother, a high-spirited lady that she had set out to bring life and laughter back to the house." (Cinderella movie script, 2015).
It can be seen through the dialogue in the minute of 36.21 below: “Calm yourself, now listen to me. It is proven in the movie scene when his servant told that he was the second, at the minute of 12:15, which is evident from the dialogue: "The second is not enough and will never be enough. Furthermore, he was very angry when he was not there managed to retrieve the lamp in the cave, in the minute of 39.50.
Meanwhile, Cinderella's stepmother started looking for attention when she thought she had a chance to do it in the ballroom. This is clearly depicted in the minute 42.37 through dialogue: “I will not have anyone associate my daughters with you. Meanwhile, Cinderella's stepmother in this case made Cinderella the servant rather than her stepdaughter who was once an orphan, this is shown through narration in the minute of 22.07: "And through and through they have Ella as a lesser sister than ' considered a servant" (Cinderella movie script, 2019).
Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia favors without mutual responsibility as the symptom of NPD also appears in the character.
Diagnostic Criteria of Malignant Narcissism
- Take Advantage of Others to get what they want
- Be Envious of Others and Believe Others Envy them
- Behave arrogantly or haughtily
- Have Difficulty in Regulating Emotions and Behaviors
It is first portrayed in the movie scene when Cinderella offered her bedroom to her stepsisters, but what actually happens was that Cinderella's stepmother asked Cinderella to stay in the attic. Just as it is portrayed in the Cinderella movie (2015), when Cinderella's stepmother slightly satirizes Cinderella's father about the beauty of Cinderella, it is seen at minute 10.28 through dialogues: "You don't say that your daughter was so beautiful." "Oh she's following." "her mother. Her envy of Cinderella also clearly shown in a scene where Cinderella could not handle her stepmother's cruelty anymore, it is in the minute of 24.01.03 through dialogues: "And although no one deserves to be treated the way you treat me , why you do it.
Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia does what he is told as shown in the Hakim minute. He further asked the guards to bully Princess Jasmine, as shown at minute 01:35:48 through the dialogue: “I think we've heard enough from you, princess. Meanwhile, the character of Cinderella's stepmother showed arrogance in the scene of Cinderella's grief after her father's death.
The previous quote clearly shows the symptom of arrogant behavior that Cinderella's stepmother suffered from in the Cinderella film (2015). It is clearly shown in the minute of 23.01.37 when he goaded Aladdin into falling into the sea to prove that Aladdin possessed the magic lamp. It is clearly shown in the minute of 8:55 when she learned of Cinderella's father's death through dialogue: “Can't you see?
Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia In the previous dialogue, it is clearly depicted that Cinderella's stepmother associated her bad temper through her miserable behavior and facial expression towards Cinderella.
The Impact of Malignant Narcissism Sufferer towards their surroundings
Even in this case, Cinderella's stepmother showed her feelings of anger as a symptom of NPD, which leads her to behave badly, as a symptom of malignant narcissism. Based on the analysis, the researcher concludes that two evil characters in two different Disney films, Jafar in Aladdin (2019) and Cinderella's Stepmother in Cinderella (2015), suffer from narcissistic personality disorder, particularly typical of malignant narcissism, as both characters showed symptoms of narcissism personality disorders that cause them to have symptoms of malignant narcissism as specific types of narcissistic disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder later lead to a special type of narcissistic disorder, which is malignant narcissism.
The results show that both villain characters suffer from malignant narcissism because the two characters have all the symptoms of malignant narcissism. Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Finally, the narcissistic personality disorder and the symptoms of malignant narcissism lead the characters to create impacts on their surroundings, such as hurting other people mentally and physically. In other words, malignant narcissism naturally creates a bad impact on the sufferers lives and their environment as it leads them into immoral feelings and behavior.
It can be said that the findings are closely related to the first previous study used since it discusses the same discussion and resulted in the same symptoms of Malignant Narcissism, but that thesis analyzed the real person. In conclusion, to know that someone suffers from Malignant Narcissism and the effects of his disorder on his or her surroundings, it is important to observe the behavior and then use the correct theory as a guide to find the result. This type of method could also be applied to analyzing Malignant Narcissism in a fictional character in a literary work.
Perhaps future researchers interested in a broader discussion of malignant narcissism can focus on its relationship to another topic so that there will be an improvement in psychological knowledge in society.
