Background of the Study

Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, after the release of the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, the film will finally be released in 2019 by the streaming platform Netflix. On the other hand, (Grierson, 2019) states that “the role of parents is very influential in changing children's lives” in this memoir.

Usually the writer is one of the characters in the story and uses "I" to put himself in the first person. His curiosity is very high, this is evident from the conversations in the memories. Most of the action in The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind takes place in Malawi, in the first chapter William explains what it's like in the village where he lives.

From the quote above, it can be seen that William always uses the pronoun "I" to position himself in the story line. Usually the author introduces the characters in the memoirs, describes the place and time of the events. In the memoir The Boy Who Hannessed The Wind, William is the subject in which he strives to have a better life.

Everyone in the house is upset with William because he is collecting rubbish to do his project. William also tells how his family's economy is going, in the quote below (17) William describes the livelihood of the societies that will one day create a problem that William will solve.

In the story William told as he entered his teens, he and Geoffrey became interested in radio. This allows him to change the lives of the people of Malawi by creating a windmill that can supply his house with electricity.

It is told in this memoir when William feels the impact of the change in government power. In the quote above, William described the riots that occurred during Banda's presidency, his political style, which was classified as communist and had to ask people to obey all the rules he made to make the riots break out in that time. Some strange things happened, like the disappearance of the list of beneficiaries of the fertilizer subsidies experienced by William's father and his friends. In this case, William had described this incident several times in his memoirs.

The text of the memoir reveals that changing the president does not improve the situation. Many suspect that the scandal that occurred was caused by the government, it was not necessarily an act of President Banda but President Muluzi who was then occupied as an opposition party was involved in this to finance his career aimed at was the overthrow of the president from Banda. William described the poor condition of Kackholo Secondary School at the time where there were no chairs for students, thus requiring students to sit on the floor, there was a large hole in the classroom floor.

Literary structure describes the implied structure, indirectly the structure in the memoir conveys a certain meaning. The structure is the main door in the memoir that can be a solution to any existing problems, in this case William argues that making a windmill will bring changes to life in his village. In the story, William had to find a way out of his problem because he could not continue his education.

Using the theory of genetic structuralism to analyze the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, it is concluded that although William lives amid limitations and difficulties in accessing education in Malawi. Because William explains in the memoir that he was unable to access education in windmill making because he was self-taught with the help of Gilbert and Geoffrey.
