REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Previous Related Research Findings
Sopin (2015) concluded that it is important for teachers to be aware of their students' beliefs regarding the role of grammar instruction. This does not mean that teachers must necessarily teach grammar if their students require it, but rather that teachers can become more aware of the kinds of learning techniques that students are used to and prefer, and how these ideas mesh with their own. To become aware of each other's beliefs about the roles of grammar instruction and error correction, it can be beneficial for students and teachers to initiate dialogues such as those that occurred during this study.
Based on the above explanation, the researcher can conclude that the same -ing form can confuse the learner as to how and where the gerund should be used correctly, but the weight that the mistake is not such a big mistake is also very important. motivating. Positive error correction can represent a kind of motivation in the process of learning a foreign language, and with a descriptive qualitative method, the researcher wants to analyze the ability of English students to use gerunds in writing.
Error Analysis
Making mistakes is a sign that students have not mastered the rules of the language they are learning. These mistakes occur during the student's study because they have not received enough knowledge. Richards in Ramadhan said that intra-linguistic or developmental errors reflect the learner's competence at a particular stage and illustrate some of the general characteristics of language acquisition.
Overgeneralization is a negative intralinguistic error that deals with subjects that are contrastive in the grammar of languages. In this case, they should reduce the 'to' in the sentence "he asked me" because he applied the same preposition to different verbs. This type is sometimes called semantic error, which may be derived from misunderstanding the distinction in the target language.
Learners in the early stages of learning tend to omit function words rather than content words. In language teaching, either a mother tongue or a second language teaching, examining students' mistakes is very important.
Grammar
On the other hand, if someone does not know the grammar, he/she will not be able to speak that language, or the listeners will be confused in catching the message, so they will never be able to communicate with each other. In other words, without knowing the grammar of the language, one cannot be said to have learned the language, and without learning grammar it seems impossible to learn a language, since the grammar tells about the use of the language. From the above explanation it is clear that grammar is very essential and important and it cannot be separated from language either.
Elbow in Louis (2016:7) said that grammar interferes with writing: “Learning grammar is a formidable task that takes crucial energy away from working on your writing, and worse, the process of learning grammar interferes with write to most people and nothing helps. their writing so much as to ignore grammar.”

Conceptual Framework
There were two tests to know students' ability in using gerund in this research, they are completion test and translation test. After collecting the data from the tests, the researcher analyzed the gerund usage errors made by the students in their writing. The population of this research was the fifth semester students of the English department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, which consisted of 10 classes and the total number of students is 387.

The researcher concluded that misinformation is the predominant type of error in the use of gerund in writing made by the fifth semester students of the English department at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. As mentioned in the previous chapter, the data sources of this study are the students' test in the use of gerund.

It usually happens in the usage of gerund after preposition made by class VD of the fifth semester English students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
In the findings, I calculated that the percentage of each type of error found from the students' test resulted in the use of gerunds. Error analysis on the students' mastery on the use of Gerund, after infinitive and infinitive without. HR: make planning is next step to Appendix D.Total From the Error's answer of the Students.
RESEARCH METHOD
Research Design
In this research, I administered tests to the fifth semester students of the English Department of the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
Population and Sample
- List of Verbs Frequently Followed by Gerund
 - Population of the Research
 - The Criteria of Kinds of Errors
 - Total Identification of the Students’ Errors
 - The Result of Students Error based on the Kinds of Gerund
 - Types and Number of Error

The result of all tests showed that the comprehensibility of the gerund in the third grade in high school is very poor. After identifying the errors based on the types of gerund, the researcher found that there were 74 errors in the use of gerund as a subject, 103 errors in the use of gerund as an object, and 189 errors in the use of gerund after preposition. In the results, the underlined words are incorrect because the students did not fully understand the structure of gerunds.
The percentage score from each type of errors based on the table of findings, the omission error category had 36%, the addition category error had 4%, the misinformation category had 53%, the misorder category had only 7%. Based on the table. in the findings, the researcher concluded that misinformation was a dominant mistake made by the fifth semester of English department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. In this test, students are asked to choose the correct words in the box and then fill in the blanks in the sentences (numbers 1-10).
