Ethics in reproduction expert to deliver Miller Lecture 9/24/02

Dr. Adrienne Asch, the Henry R. Luce Professor in Biology, Ethics and the Politics of Human Reproduction at Wellesley College, will deliver the annual JoAnn Miller Memorial Lecture at 8 p.m. Oct. 1 in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall on the Alfred University campus. Her topic is "Ethical Issues in A.R.T. (Assisted Reproductive

Technologies)." The annual lecture, which focuses on ethical issues in medicine, is open to the public free of charge.At Wellesley College, Asch teaches courses such as "Multidisciplinary Approaches to Abortion;" "Ethical and Social Issues in Genetics;" "Women and Motherhood;" "Ethical and Policy Issues in Reproduction;" and "Literature and Medicine."Her research focuses on the ethical, political, psychological and social implications of human reproduction and the family. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters, and is co-editor of Prenatal Testing and Disability Rights, published in 2000 by Georgetown University Press, and is completing a book on assisted reproduction for Johns Hopkins University Press. In addition to her teaching and research, Asch has considerable experience with local, state and national policy-making groups. From 1987 to 1990, she was an associate in the Social Science and Policy Group with the New Jersey Bioethics Commission. In 1993, she was a member of the Bioethics Working Group of the Clinton Task Force on Health Care Reform and in 1995 served as a member of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and the Society for Disability Studies. Currently Asch serves on the boards of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, the Boston Women's Health Book Collective, and the Council for Responsible Genetics.Asch received a B.A. in philosophy from Swarthmore College; an M.S. in social work,

community organization and planning from Columbia University School of Social Work, and a Ph.D. in social psychology, also from Columbia University.##
