Student Financial Aid by Campus

Gift aid does not need to be earned (for example work study) or repaid (for example loans). IU gift aid includes funds held by the IU Foundation, and private gift aid includes funds from other states and countries. IU gift aid includes funds held by the IU Foundation, and private gift aid includes funds from other states and countries.

Undergrad Gift Aid and Student Loans by Funding Source

Between 2006-07 and 2008-09, the annual percentage of students borrowing student loans in Bloomington decreased by 1%, while the percentage receiving gift aid increased by 3.3%. The average gift aid per students increased at approximately the same rate as the average per student loans: 24%. Between 2006-07 and 2008-09, the annual percentage of students borrowing student loans at the regional IU campuses increased by 6.2%, and the percentage receiving gift aid increased by 7.5%.

Aggregate Student Loans of Bachelor Degree Recipients

However, campus-specific numbers vary from these general trends, in part because of each campus's percentage of independent students (who have higher borrowing limits) and part-time students (who can attend and borrow for more years than full-time students). . Hoosier students made up 88.4% of those filing a FAFSA, and 78% of those Hoosier FAFSA filers had financial need. For those Hoosiers who filed a FAFSA and had financial need, the charts below illustrate the percentage of students by family income.

Financial need is determined based on the FAFSA and the estimated cost of attendance, which includes tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, books and supplies, local transportation costs, and personal expenses. The next two pages of the Fact Book show the average percentage of need that was covered by gift aid, work-study and need-based loans for Hoosiers in the lower two income brackets shown below.

Full-Time Hoosier Undergrads with Need - by Income

The chart below illustrates the average percentage of full-time Hoosiers' financial need that was not met by grant aid or need-based self-help (unmet need) for low- and moderate-income students. Also shown are the average percentage of needs met by grant aid and needs-based self-help for students with the level of unmet need shown below. Full-time, low-income Hoosier students have a greater share of their financial needs met through donations than their middle-income peers, in part due to federal and state need-based subsidies, which target students with lower income.

Income

When students have unmet needs, they and their families may seek additional employment, or take out additional loans to cover their educational expenses. A rough index of instructional resources is obtained by dividing credit enrollment by the number of full-time teachers and administrators. However, that average is skewed because it includes the Health Division in Indianapolis, where credit enrollment is a poor indicator of the intensity of educational efforts.

Instruction and Instruction-Related Space Per FTE Student Enrollment

A measure of teaching intensity is the space of the classroom and classroom service area divided by weekly student contact hours in the fall semester. Another element that affects the utilization factor is the number of square feet of classroom space available per FTE student.

The 2 allotable square feet previously reported for the bookstore, cafeteria, credit union and medical education are included in the academic-administrative square feet as part of Kettler Hall. Notes: The reduction in ancillary services and resulting total square footage assigned is a result of a recent revision to postsecondary education facilities inventory classification standards, which now exclude circulation space for parking structures from the allocation category.
