less dark, particularly below, the contrast between thatofdorsaland
ventralsurfacesevidentenough

Diagnosis.

Sizeand
general characters as in Microtus (Ph;romys) JohannesThomas,
but color dark, the generaleffect approaching mars-brown
instead ofdull ochraceous-buft*.Color.

Upperparts auniform fine grizzle ofcream-buff"and blackwith adistinctbrownishwash
oncrown
andalongmiddleofback, the general effectsuggestingKidgway'smars-brown
and not in theleastresembling the pallid ochraceous-buff of Microtus Johannes. Sides not so dark as back, the grizzling less evident. 'Underparts light cream-buffmuch
clouded bythe blackish-slateundercolor. Feetdull huffy white withan evidentbrownish wash. Tailwhitish below,brownishabove, not sharply bicolor.Skull
and
teeth.— The
skulland
teeth do not differ appreciablyfrom those of Microtus Johannes.They
are conspicuously smaller than inM. mandarin

Similarto Ochotona dauurica(Pallas)fromtheMongolian Plateau, butdorsal outlineofskull lessconvexand
audital bullae slightly larger. Differs from 0.bedfordiThomas,
of Shensi,and
Shansi, China, in smallersize(particularly of skull)more
convex uppercranialoutline,and much
smaller auditalbullae.*Measurementsinparenthesis are thoseofanadultmaleMicrotusmandarinusfrom the vicinity ofTai-yuan-fu,Shansi.

Color.

As in the related species the general color is a lighthuff darkened bya plentiful sprinkling<>fblack hair-tips,thehuffeverywhere predominating, and becoming clearer andmore
yellowish along sides,particularly in region of shoulder. A faintly indicated pale area between cars. Underparts and feet dull whitewith a slighthuffy tinge;
throat crossed bya broad handof dull huff, thisareasometimes extending backward along median line. Ear with the usual dark
marking
on outerside.Measurements.
