How many different ways does RC compliment Cal on his car?

1.

RC compliments Cal’s car in two different ways:

first, by saying, "She's a beauty!" and second, by expressing admiration with, "How she drive?"

How does Cal acknowledge the compliment?

Cal acknowledges the compliment by responding,

"Like a dream. Even on the potholes around here,"

indicating his pride in the car and satisfaction with how well it performs.

Jack Palmer gives Donna Burns a bouquet of flowers. Donna reacts with delight, saying, "Oh, thank you! They're beautiful!" which shows her appreciation for the thoughtful gift.

Find the exchanges of compliments and their responses. Note especially the way Donna compliments Mary.

Mary compliments Donna’s home: Mary says, "What a lovely home you have!" Donna responds warmly with, "Why, thank you. I'm so glad you could come."

Mary compliments Donna’s garden: Mary says, "Your garden is beautiful, Donna." Donna acknowledges the compliment by simply saying, "Thank you."

Donna compliments Mary’s expertise: Donna shows appreciation for Mary’s work by saying, "George mentioned that you and Jack are specialists in shade flowers. Aren't you two illustrating a book? That must be very interesting." Mary responds with gratitude, saying,

"It's nice of you to remember," and explains that they are working

on a book for the Wildlife Federation.

Purpose

Compliments express approval, and their main

purpose is to show that you like some aspect of the other person's appearance, belongings, or work.

This reassures the other person that his or her taste, appearance, etc., is appreciated by other people.

How to compliment

Usually, you compliment someone if you notice something new about the

person's appearance. You may also compliment a person on his or her general appearance

Whom to compliment

You may compliment anyone you have occasion to talk with. It may be a close friend or someone you have just me

Replying to compliments

There are two basic ways of replying to

compliments: accepting them and rejecting them. In most cases, it is best to accept the compliment.
