IN

FACING ASEAN

ECONOMIC COMMUNITY OF2M5 HeryWinoto

ABSTRACT

In

entering the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

by

201t the competition between ASEAN countries

in the field

of goods ancl services

will

increase sharply

due to

the

possibility that an ASEAN country is able to sell its gouls and services production to other

countries around ASEAN freely. In regard to

Indonesia,

AEC is able

to

create opporfunities and challenges

for

Indonesia's readiness

in

facing AEC which is marked

by

Indonesia's cornpetitiveness against countries

in

ASEAN region.

Ln the report of the competitiveness between countries

within

the World Fronomic Forum (201,4), lndtrnesia's

position in ASEAN region fell behind

Singapore, Malaysia"

Brunei

Darussalam,

and Thailand. One of the

determinants

of a

country's

competitiveness

is

its human resources. The model of neo dassical erononic growth has provided empirical evidence that human resources deternrine

the

econornic

growth

of

a

country.

The

Neo-dassical approach

of

economic growth

focuses oll

the

production.

As the quality and quantity of investment in human capitnl particularly

in

terms

of

education,

health, and research improve, the economic growth and comPetitiveness

of

a country

will

increase. The accumulation

of

sciences pnrviding es.sential innovations and benefits for economic

gnowth will b€ stimulated through

education. Meanwhile, edumtion

will

also contribute to rience and knowledge through research and development (R&D) which is higlrly needed for economic growth. Scierrce and R & D is also the key to compete and win the competition.

By

using descriptivecross-section

data of 2a14 taken from various

sources,

this paper will investigate the transmission mechanisms of human capital investrnent within Indone.sia's competitiveness

against

AEC. Based

on the

observahon of

the

variable data distribution of human capital and the countSr's competitiveness in AEC,

it an

be seen that the increasing growth of investment in human capital

is

positively correlated with the increase in the competitiveness ofa country.
