volume three, number thirty-six september 2, 1973 DENTISTS "RETREAT" FOR TEACHING CONFERENCE

More than 140 members of the Indiana University School of Dentistry faculty will gather at Turkey Run State Park Thursday and Friday for the 9th annual.

teaching conference. Focusing on the talents that make a good dentist -- the talents of a scientist, an artist and a psychyologist -- the conference is designed to imp~ove teaching effectiveness.

\

Dr. James R. Roche, chairman of the teaching committee that sponsors the conference, said, "The best teachers in the dental school are a combination of scientist, artist, and psychologist. The committee has chosen one out- standing man from each of these fields to lead the conference with discussions about their rol s in the classroom and how they improve teaching within their field. II

William R. Breneman, Luther Dana Waterman professor of zoology at I.U., will address the dentists on "The Scientist in the Classroom." Dr. Breneman, considered one of the university's great teachers, has received the Brown Derby Award as the most popular professor at Bloomington and the Frederic Bachman Li ber Memorial Award for distinguished teaching.

distinguished professor of fine arts at I.U., will address his remarks to the idea, "An Artist Looks at Teaching.". Professor Pozzatti is .known primarily as a printmaker and also has taught painting and drawing. His

many awards include the $3 ,000 first prize in the "Hundred Best Prints of the Year" show sp~nsored in 1963 by the Society of American Graphic Artists.

Richard T. Snid'e.r, associate professor of clinical psychology at the I.U.

Medical Center will talk about "A Psychologist's Approach." Dr. Snider is senior staff psychologist and chief psychologist at the Riley Hospital Child Guidance Clinic.

After each speaker there will be a task force presentation on the same subject as the speech, followed by open discussion. The task forces, made up of

faculty and students, have been meeting this summer to prepare their presen- tations.

On the first evening of the conference the conferees will hear a talk from Thomas A. Mont about the "Coach as Teacher." Mont is head football coach, director of athletics, and head of the department of physical education at DePauw University. Mont is widely known on the.sports banquet speaking circuit throughout the East and Midwest.

About 65 per cent of the full-time faculty is expected to attend; the conference already has an overflow registration for participants. Besides the teachers, there are 12 students from many of the different programs in the dental school who will participate.

The I.U. School of Dentistry is one of the very few graduate schools in the Country which devotes several days each year to the theme of improving

teaching. The conference is made possible through the support of the Indiana University Fotmdation, the dental school alumni association, and the regist- ration fees.

PLEA TO FOIL BOOK PHANTOM

.,

Mike Wagoner, student activities officer, warns that the book phantom is loos~

again. The phantom apparently has an insatiable appetite for abandoned tomes and strikes within minutes after their desertion.

Ergo, Wagoner requests that teachers encourage students to write their names and phone numbers in books, that teachers pick up and hold books left in their classrooms, and that teachers ask students to double check their "inventory"

before they leave the classroom. Put simply, all this means: Don't leave those books lying arotmd!

MEDLINE ORIENTATION

The School of Medicine Library will present a slide-tape orientation of MEDLINE at 4 p.m. September 11-13.

13

'fhe program was developed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Library and has been loaned by the Midwest Regional Medical Library. In 16 minutes it explains the background of MEDLINE, comparing it with MEDLARS in terms of data base, retrieval, and response time. It also mentions the factors to be

considered in requesting a MEDLINE search. Using a narr.ative technique, i t then shows the audience how the system solves a specific problem for the user.

The complete MEDLINE printout is shown, from "Hello for Elhill II" through

"Goodbye!". All three logical connectors are used in the formulation, and the "Print," "Print Title," and "Print Full" commands are all shown.

Each step in the search is fully explained, and an attempt is made to show the logical development of the on-line formulation. Typing er'rors and error messages are deliberately included, since audiences enjoy seeing a computer "talk back" to the user.

MEDLINE is available to Medical Center personnel and students. If you are interested in seeing the presentation, please call the Reference

Department, Ext. 7182, for the room number and to give your preferred date.
