The meeting is intended for professional personnel, community leaders, persons with sickle cell disease, parents of children with the disease, schoolteachers and

principals, medical and nursing students and any others who may have contact with the disease. All interested residents of the area are invited to spend the day or attend any part of the program, Dr. Merritt said.

Of the total of 21,507 persons tested by the Indianapolis center since its opening in 1971, 10.48 per cent proved to have the trait, and 3 per cent actually have the disease. Under certain circumstances, those having the trait may have children with the disease~ according to Miss Barbara Houston at the center.

The Indianapolis center is one of 15 of its type across the country funded by the National Institutes of Health, Miss Houston said. Its mission is education, screening, genetic counseling, and research in sickle cell disease. Much of the work is done at the center at 3549 North College Avenue, but some clinics and testing services are scheduled in other sections of the state and the research is based

at the medical center.

Various facets of the disease will be discussed by visiting authorities during the Wednesday program which opens with 8 a.m. registration. Morning topics include

"Sickle Cell Trait, Fact and Fancy," "The Adolescent and Adult with Sickle Cell Disease," "The Si0.e ...-Cell Disease Patient as a Member of Society" and a general
