* Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU)
• Heritaged from the higher educational institution of Chosen Dynasty, Sungkyunkwan (1398~)
* Re-established by yurims(Confucian aristocracies) in 1946
* The school foundation is Samsung Co (in 1970’s & since 1997).
Introduction
* The important points we need to consider in regard to the educational excellence for general education in Korean higher education:
- What kind of world the students will live in?
- What sort of college graduates will be needed by the society?
- What type of college is going to be the model of Korean universities?
- What kind of education should be offered to the college students?
- Which is the most effective teaching method for college liberal education?
* The general education curriculum in SKKU is steering toward capacity-oriented curriculum to achieve its educational excellence.
* The main capacities to be acquired;
- humanity mind for community
- communication ability based on critical thinking - problem-solving ability based on creativity
- global capacity depend on the understanding of multi-cultures
- broad knowledge based on interdisciplinary study
* To accomplish this object, the general education curriculum of SKKU combined both the core-based curriculum and the distribution-based curriculum at the same time.
* Recently, SKKU decided to change its general
education curriculum to the direction of intensifying education for classics.
* On the background of this transformation lied the will of SKKU to go back to the very basic of liberal education.
* The new curriculum will be applied to all SKKU freshmen beginning from 2020 academic year.
Background of Curriculum Change
1. To intensify students’ core capacities necessary for the 4th Industrial Revolution
→ newly introducing <Classics and Great Books>
subfield to improve problem-solving ability, communication ability, and creativity.
2. To adapt to a new situation which entails the change
of features of college freshmen after receiving a fusion curriculum(고교 문·이과 통합교육과정) during their
high school years.
→ intensifying convergence curriculum regardless of students’ majors
3. To overcome disadvantages of dual campus system
→ forming LCs(Learning Community) combining
students from both campus & let them take same class in <Classics & Great Books> and <Creativity>
subfields.
4. To increase the possibility of dual majors and/or
convergence majors among humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences(or engineering).
→ eliminating the wall between <Humanities and
Social Science Basics> and <Natural Science Basics>
