RETROSPECTIVE: THE HERRON YEARS

Edmund Brucker and Harry A. Davis, cornerstones of the Herron School of Art for the past four decades, are retiring this May. To honor the two internationally known artists, the Herron Alumni Association will sponsor a retrospective of their work at the Lyman & Snodgrass Gallery, 1456 North Delaware Street, April 9 through May 6.

A preview of the exhibition for Herron alumni, students and their guests will highlight the 1983 Herron School of Art Homecoming on Saturday, April 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the gallery. The festivities will include short addresses by Indianapolis, Herron and university officials commemorating the contributions of these men.

Both Brucker and Davis have attained distinction as professional artists in addition to their careers as teachers. Davis has won major awards beginning with the Prix de Rome in 1938. He has received others at the Ball State Drawing and Small Sculpture Show (a national exhibition), the Hoosier Salon and the Chautauqua Exhibit. Davis has taught at Herron for 37 years.

Brucker has been awarded the $4,000 Millikan Award in recognition of his artistic achievement from the Art Association of Indianapolis board of trustees. He also has been named "Sagamore of the Wabash" in recognition of his artistic achievement as an Indiana artist. He has taught at Herron for 45 years.

The retrospective at the Lyman & Snodgrass Gallery provides a unique opportunity to review both artist's works during their years at Herron.

REVEALING MYSTERIES OF JAPAN

A seminar designed to take some of the mystery out of American-Japanese relations is scheduled next month in Indianapolis.

The program, titled "Japan in the '80s," will cover several aspects of Japanese culture, according to Thomas Fedor, director of international programs at

Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The program will take place at the Hilton Hotel, 150 North Meridian Street, from 3 p.m. April 11 to 3 p.m. April 12.

Fedor says that Japan, next to Canada, is America's most significant trading

partner and closest ally but at the same time is a country that is little understood by Americans.

The seminar will cover several aspects of Japanese culture. Some topics include: "Japan's Party System in an Age of Transition;" "Japanese Culture Trends in the 1980s;" and "Graying Japan and the Changing Functions of the Family."

Program sponsors are the Japan Foundation and the Japan-United States Friendship Commission. Hosts are IUPUI, International Programs Office, Indiana University-- Bloomington, and the Indiana Consortium for International Programs.

Fedor hopes the program will attract people from business and education as well as the general public. There is no charge for any of the programs including the dinner or lunch, but it is necessary to pre-register to attend.

Please contact the IUPUI Office of International Programs at Ext. 2081.

LEARNING INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY

Nearly 200 high school students from an eight-county area in central Indiana will be participating in the 31st annual Model United Nations conference Thursday

and Friday on campus.

I

The Model U.N. is an exercise that simulates the activities of the real U.N. in New York City. Top students from 20 high schools are assigned various roles that correspond to actual delegate positions in the U.N., and the students try to serve the needs and goals of that country accurately.

The delegates already have heard from experts in international relations. Several specialists from the IUPUI faculty have briefed the students with background material concerning the areas they represent. Students also have been getting ready by

preparing in-depth studies of the economies, national interests and national goals of the countries they are pretending to represent.

Leslie A. Wood, professor of education and the administrator of the model U.N.

activities this year, says, "We think it builds an increased understanding of the world and our relationship with it. It is also a valuable academic experience. It help the students develop the kinds of intellectual competencies measured on college entrance exams."

Wood also says that since this is the oldest model U.N. in the U.S., some intense inter-school rivalries have developed. In fact, he says, some schools have sought to represent specific countries so that they can face traditional opponents in rival high schools.
