MUSIC AND TWO FORUMS MARK SPECIAL MONTH

S

ocial Work, the Black Student Union and some gospel music enthusiasts and IUB have made special plans in honor of Black History Month, celebrated in February. A gospel music concert, "Black Presence is Evident in Gospel Music," is Feb. 22. It begins at 7 p.m. with a grand processional of several local and regional community and church choirs. The free public concert is in Lecture Hall, Room 100, and will feature the music of Stephen Coleman's Community Concert Choir and the Joy Chorale Choir of the Light of the World Christian Church, directed by Charles Clency. Also expected are the Evansville chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and other groups.

A forum on the disintegrating black family is set for Feb. 24, 6 p.m., in the Roof Lounge of the Union Building. Sponsored by the Black Student Union, the forum will feature a panel that includes Dr. Woodrow Myers, commissioner, Indiana State Board of Health;

Richard Hope, Ph.D., chairman, Dept. of Sociology, and Monroe H. Little, Ph.D., history.

Also, Oliver C.S. Tzeng, Ph.D., Osgood Laboratory for Cross-Cultural Research, and Lavada Merriweather, M.S.W., Indianapolis Housing Authority. All are welcome.

Another forum, "Search for Excellence: Foundation for Social Work Practice in a Multicultural and Multiethnic Society" is planned in conjunction with Black History Month. The School of Social Work is sponsoring the forum set for Feb. 25 from 1-5 p.m.

in the school's commons. A reception follows. Keynote speaker will be Judy Rausch, director, Midwest Training Resource Center, Legal Services Organization, speaking on the subject, "Personal and Professional Reflections on Practice in a Multicultural

Environment." Earlene S. Moore, executive director, Community Centers of Indianapolis, Inc., will repond to the address. Gayle Cox, associate professor, School of Social Work, will respond to an addresss by Michael Priller, president, Community Services Group, Human Relations and Management Consultants. Representative William A. Crawford (D-Ind.), a ranking member of the House Committees on Aged and Aging, Governmental Affairs and Urban Affairs, will present closing remarks. All are welcome.

And, south of us, IUB is planning lectures, jazz music, special movies and theater. For a complete schedule of events, call Lillian Parker, chairman of the campus observance plannning committee, 812 335-4682.

In response to questions from faculty about buying academic apparel for use at Commencement'and other events, Alumni Relations on campus has arranged for an apparel rep to be on campus. Bill Young from Collegiate Cap and Gown Company will be in the Lilly Room of the Union Building on Feb. 24 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. He can measure you, provide information on costs and order your apparel for arrival in

Meridian will be open Feb. 22-23 and March 1-2 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wishard Hospital will benefit from the $1 admission.

Fear of Heights?--People with a marked fear of heights are needed by the Dept. of Psychiatry for its study of biological and psychological factors in phobic anxiety.

Great Decisions 186--Virginia M. Liggett, longtime resident of Argentina and Puerto Rico presents "Focus on Argentina and Brazil" on Feb. 18, 7:30 p.m., Christian Theological Seminary.

Last Games--You can still see an IUPUI Metros basketball game. The Women play their last game at home with Franklin College on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.; the Men play their last one with Marion, there, on Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. You all come.

Forum--Next in the Women's Studies Forum is Diane Barber, biology, presenting "Resolving Infertility" on Feb. 20, noon-1 p.m., CA 438. All welcome; bring lunch.

Need Glaucoma Patients--Glaucoma patients using Timoptic and one other glaucoma

medication are needed for a new drug being tested in a study directed by Dr. Louis B.

Cantor, assistant professor, Dept. of Ophthalomology and director of the Glaucoma Service at Wishard Hospital and I.U. The new medication, Metipranolol, gives hope that some patients may respond better to it than to other drugs. Accepted volunteers must be

available for visual examinations every two weeks at the Regenstrief Health Clinic during a two-mongh testing period. Patients will receive free eye exams, a free three-month's supply of their glaucoma medication and reimbursement for expenses incurred while

participating. Call 630-6795.

All Welcome--The next Rehabilitation Research Seminar, sponsored by the Dept. of

Psychology, features Marci Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor, social work, presenting

"Participant Observation in a Psychiatric Residential Setting" on Feb. 21, noon-1 p.m., KB 054B. Bring lunch.

Lot News--Parking Services reminds us that Parking Lot #7 is closed for construction. It is suggested that we use Lot #1, north of Psychiatric Research; Lot #20, west of the Union Building, or Lot #59, south of the School of Dentistry.

IUB LISTS CAST FOR 'DON GIOVANNI'

The cast for "our" special performance of the opera, "Don Giovanni," has been announced by the IU Opera Theater, which is bringing us the opera as part of the "Music for

Indianapolis" series. The cast includes Victor Ledbetter of Georgia as the Don, Gregory Rahming of Florida as Leporello and Janet Williams of Detroit as Donna Anna. Also,

Previn Moore of Ohio as Don Ottavio, Jean Wilkinson of Arkansas as Donna Elvira, Bergthor Palsson of Iceland as Masetto, Yun-Yi Chen of Taiwan as Zerlina and David Langan of New Jersey as Commendatore. John Priddy will conduct the opera at Clowes Hall on Butler's campus on Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available at Clowes and at all

Ticketmaster locations, including the natatorium. They range from $4 to $16, with discounts available for students, senior citizens and groups of more than 15.

EXILED SOUTH AFRICAN PASTOR TO SPEAK HERE

Rev. Maurice Ngakana, Lutheran pastor in exile from his country of South Africa, will lead a small group discussion on "The Struggle of Faith and Discipleship in South Africa"

on Feb. 17 from 5:45-6:45 p.m. in BR 160 and will give a free public lecture entitled

"Apartheid in South Africa: Situation and Responses" on Feb. 18 at noon, BS 3014. He was the general secretary for the South African Council of Church, Div. of Evangelism and Mission, and also served as a member of the All African Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches. Ngakana, who says if he were to go back to his country, "I would first have to make arrangements with a mortuary for my funeral," is sponsored by the Indianapolis Lutheran Campus Ministry. All are welcome.

LEARN ABOUT BURNOUT, DUE PROCESS AND LETTER FORMATS

The Office of Personnel is offering several workshops to all interested employees. The first, "Are You Burning Out?" is Feb. 18 from 1:30-3 p.m. in UV 200. Symptoms of burnout and ways to get back energy and enthusiasm will be discussed. Then on Feb. 20 from

9-11:30 a.m. in the Grissom/Lilly Room at the Union, the workshop "The Discipline Process at IUPUI" will explain and discuss termination, the grievance procedure and unemployment compensation. Finally, this month on Feb. 28 is "Formats for Letters and Memos" which will present various ways to handle written communication. To register or for more information, call Barbara Jones, Ext. 8931.

Lent--The Catholic Student Center invites all to special Lenten masses and events. In addition to Sunday Masses at 5:30 p.m., there are also Wednesday Masses at 5:30 p.m. and Listening on Wednesday from 9-10:30 p.m.--both through March 26. "A Resurrection for a Friday in February" is Feb. 28 from 6-10 p.m., and a Mass at 5:30 p.m. and a Seder supper celebration at 6:30 p.m. is set for Holy Thursday, March 27. Good Friday, March 28, offers a prayer service at 12:10 p.m. and the movie "Ghandi" at 8 p.m. Easter

celebrations include a Vigil and Mass at 11 p.m. at the Carmelite Monastery.

'MAGIGIAH'S NEPHEW' OPENS ON CAMPUS FEB. 21

Lewis' classic tale, "The Magician's Nephew," will be presented by the IUPUI University Theatre beginning Friday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m.

in the Mary Cable Building on campus. Adapted for stage by Aurand Harris, dean of American children's playwrights, "The Magician's Nephew" premiered at the U. of Texas in 1984 to rave reviews. This play, recommended for children of all ages over seven years old, is a tale about Digory, who in his search for a healing apple to help his dying mother, takes his friend Polly through magical worlds, until they awaken the evil Queen Jadis. They unintentionally bring her into the world of Narnia, a magical land where trees grow

before your eyes, that has been sung into existence by the good lion Aslan. All will delight in the land of talking animals and miraculous happenings as good battles evil. · Other productions of the play are on Feb. 22, 28 and March 1. Curtain is at 8 p.m. on Fridays, 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets are $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for children. For a small fee there will be day care provided for children under seven. Learning Resources reminds faculty of the special program planned for them,

"Teaching: Looking to the Future," this year's annual Learning Resources Committee Symposium. Special speakers and panels are scheduled at different locations on campus the day of the symposium, Feb. 21 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The winner of this year's Edward C. Moore Award for outstanding teaching will give an address. For a schedule, call Pat at Ext. 7442.

RILEY SETS CLASSES FOR PARENTS

The Riley Child Psychiatry Clinic is offering classes in Systemic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP). Classes will be from 6-8 p.m. on eight consecutive Mondays beginning March 3.
