P & G GIVES DENTISTRY $50,000 FOR UNRESTRICTED RESEARCH

A long and fruitful relationship between I.U. and Procter & Gamble Co. has resulted in another grant--this one for $50,000 to the School of Dentistry for unrestricted research.

The school's dean H. William Gilmore said a fund will be established that will offer faculty the freedom to explore new ideas and creative approaches to all areas of dentistry. Grants from the fund will be made on a competitive basis. The gift was made through The Campaign for Indiana, whose chairman is Herman B Wells, university chancellor. This gift comes to us nearly 50 years after Procter and Gamble gave its first grant to dentistry in the 1940s.--J.

NEWS IN I NOTES FROM HERE IN I THERE

SPACE WEEK--There's never enough of it in the Green Sheet, but "out there" there's

plenty, so this week we celebrate Space Week, because on July 20, 1969 Neil Alden Armstrong and Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. landed on the moon and determined it was not made of green cheese. Another memorable event of the year was that IUPUI became official.

VANDERBILT GUEST--Dr. Joun Newman, associate professor of medicine, Center for Lung Research, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, presents a physiology & biophysics

seminar, "Pressure and Flow Transients Across the Lung During Exercise," on July 20, 4 p.m., room MS 205.

SUVON CHANGE--The new way of dialing SUVON numbers is in place and it is simple. Touch 6, then the whole, 7-digit number to reach people or switchboards at other schools and universities in the system.

EASY AS (LOTUS) 1-2-3--The I.U. Graduate School of Business is offering Indiana Business Seminars now through fall. The next offering is Lotus 1-2-3, July 20-22 at IUB. PICTURE PERFECT--IUPUI photographer Rick Baughn, with help from Jerry Mitchell of IUB,

Mike Kerper from Purdue and Elmer Denman from IUPU Fort Wayne, developed a conference for the University Photographers Association of America in Indianapolis last month. Focus was on electronics in photography, and Rick's image was so good he was elected UPAA's director of public relations for next year.

DON'T MISS THE (OMNI) BUS--Omnibus, a diversified exhibition of works by seven celebrated artists from here and elsewhere, continues through Aug. 6 at the Herron Gallery, Indianapolis Center for Contemporary Art. The gallery welcomes lunchtime gazers, and Herron folks

especially appreciate university guests.

KORE NEWS 'N' NOTES

REMOVE WHEN?--You aren't the first to wonder why our new parking permits tell you to

remove it before setting your vehicle in motion. It is not because some sprinter is leaping through the windows of moving cars and snatching those precious permits from your rear view mirror. No. John Gilbert says that the manufacturer of the plastic permit requires that note about motion so that if there is an accident, we cannot say that we were forced to leave the permit in the windshield and that it blocked our view and caused an accident. It is a liability issue, he said.

INTERNATIONAL HEALTH FORUK--You are invited to hear Dr. Stuart Cohen, Dept. of Medicine, discuss "Tobacco, Smoking and Health in Latin America" on July 21, 6 p.m., NU 127. For more, call Ken Barger in anthropology, 4-8207.

GO A COURTIN'--Tickets are going fast for the 1988 GTE Championships on the Sports

Center's newly refinished courts, Aug. 1-7. Get them at the Center's main office, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays. They range from $3-$20 and are also available through Ticketmaster outlets, 632-5151. Players include Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Pat Cash, Tim Mayotte and Anders Jarryd.

PROF-TURNED-LAWYER GETS THE FOURTH DEGREE

In 1984, when veteran Purdue history professor Lester Cohen turned 40, he decided he might live to be 44, so he took a chance on changing his life and gave himself those four years to get a law degree. He made it--lived to be 44 and graduated summa cum laude from the School of Law - Indianapolis last spring. His wife of many years, Marsha, hopes Lester's fourth degree is his final one. His bachelor's is from UCLA and he holds a master's and a doctorate from Yale. Cohen is already working for the Indianapolis law firm of Barnes &

Thornburg and expects to pass the bar exam that's coming up soon. His personal library was enhanced recently with the Indianapolis Bar Association's first George Dick Memorial book award, named for the deceased chief council to this region's National Labor Relations Board.
