The poor petitioned the church for the ordination of William Hopper, and he was ordained to the full work of the Gospel ministry. At the time of the organization of the Association there were only the two ordained ministers, William Hopper and David Weaver. The growth of the Association during the first years was slow but steady and healthy.

These ministers were faithful to the faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the New Testament. 34; Do we as an Association believe in spreading the Gospel and the Church's efforts to save sinners? 34;Resolved: That something be done in the wisdom of this body for the advancement of the gospel.

We have some churches, even in the sparsely settled parts, which maintain evergreen schools under the direct control of the church, every officer and teacher being a member of the church. The organization and life of the church reminds us of the church in the wilderness, persecuted but not annihilated. Rough Creek Baptist Church was founded in 1835 with ten members from Providence Church, Elder George Brock being one of the members.

Presbytery were Elders William Hopper and David Weaver, pioneer Baptist preachers in this part of the state. During the eighty-four years that the church has existed, she has had many great revival meetings. Later it was said by some, both inside and outside the church, that the church was not a missionary church.

Durham and Letty Durham, according to the general principles of the United Baptists by the following Presbytery: Elder W. The Articles of Faith, Rules of Decency and Church Covenant are the same as those of other churches in the Laurel River Association. The church has enjoyed gradual growth and several hundred members have belonged to the church since the organization of the church, the present membership being 108.

The first pastor of the church was Elder James Gun, and pastors who followed were Elders E. After his graduation the church recalled him as pastor and after serving a few years he resigned again to accept a call from the Fifth Street Baptist Church from Lexington, Ky. He was one of the charter members in the constitution of the church at Rough Creek in 1835, by William Hopper and David Weaver as the Presbytery.

While still a young man he was licensed to preach, and in his early childhood was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry.

B. ESTES

He lived what he preached and was well established in the foundations of the Gospel, fighting hard for the faith and not compromising for the truth. About the year 1869 he was ordained to the ministry of the Gospel, and was always a faithful and zealous advocate of the cause which he espoused until his death, at his home, May 10, 1915. During this period of forty-six years in the ministry, he served many churches within the borders of the Laurel River Association as Pastor, being Pastor of the churches at Long Branch and Slate Lick at the time of his death.

The church, convinced that he possessed the necessary biblical qualifications, called for his ordination, and on January 6, 1867, he was ordained to the full work of the gospel. His listeners were impressed that he was truly a man of God, endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in Company A, Twenty-fourth Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, in the Federal army, and served until the close of the war.

He was naturally endowed with superior intellectual powers, and by knowledge of the scriptures, though unsought, he assumed a position of leadership among his brethren. He was an able communicator of the scriptures and uncompromising in the defense of the truth. He was first elected moderator of the Laurel River Association in 1888 and re-elected annually until his death with the exception of three times when he was unable to attend the sessions of that body.

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the written word of God and the only infallible rule of faith and practice. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Great Head of the church and that the government is with the body. We believe that baptism and the sacrament are ordinances of the Lord and should be continued by His Church until His Second Coming.

No one may speak more than three times, except with the permission of the Association. The names of the messengers shall be recorded by the Registrar and called as often as the Association requires. Report of the following standing committees: Co-operative Program, Missions, Sunday Schools, Orphans' Homes, Temperance, Layman's Movement, B.
