This study aimed to determine the students' perception of the use of MALL in the reading class on their learning development using mobile phones as a distance learning medium, especially in the 4.0 era and due to the current conditions that students are facing, such as the corona virus . This study used descriptive qualitative research because this study aimed to explain and control symptoms how much influence the use of smartphones or mobile phones has on improving students' academic reading in the reading class. The data collection in this study was intended to obtain strong and relevant data, data collection techniques used by researchers was a questionnaire. This research was conducted in the second semester students of the English Department of the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar.

Some Previous Related Findings

The results showed that students have a positive perception and attitude towards mobile phones to support classroom activities. In general, previous studies have mostly focused on acquiring the concepts of teaching and learning via mobile learning devices to become a booming breakthrough in collaborative learning. While previous researchers have generally focused mainly on the use of mobile phones to achieve learning breakthroughs that will later gain momentum in the collaborative learning process that uses technology, while researchers want to see and determine how online learning uses mobile technology from the students' perspective to find out its effectiveness with students.

The term online learning is often synonymous with other terms such as e-learning, internet learning, web-based learning, tele-learning, distributed learning and so on (Ally, 2008). In online learning, in addition to online learning materials, there is also an online teaching and learning process. Other than that, online learning via WhatsApp not only has advantages but also has some disadvantages.

Baliu and Machmud (2017) investigated the use of the smartphone to develop students' reading comprehension from the perspectives of gender differences. The results revealed that the reading comprehension of students taught using a smartphone was better than the reading comprehension of students taught without using a smartphone. As a reader develops his reading skills, decoding skills become more automatic, but are still important in interpreting the text he is referring to (Carrel, 1988). Many pedagogical experts accept and popularize the important role of basic knowledge and pre-reading activities for its activation, he stated.

To give a clearer picture of the notion of perception, the following definitions are presented by several experts. This is possible due to differences in the value system and personality characteristics of the individual in question. What determines perception is not the type or form of stimuli, but the characteristics of the person who responds to these stimuli.

Based on the results of the analysis of the guttman scale, the results relate to the interpretation table on the "good enough" scale, which means that the perception of students using MALL in reading class is that students have positive perceptions. This means that according to students, the use of applications on the MALL or MALL itself in the reading class is good enough or enough to help them in the learning process, both in receiving the material and in completing assignments that guide them through the given application.
