1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Problem
The implementation of this online learning by the government requires all teaching and learning activities to be carried out from home. The implementation of online learning is carried out as an effort to continue realizing the goals of education in Indonesia as well as efforts to prevent the spread of the Covid-19. Online learning pushes teachers to implement tactics or strategies to teach their students in the event of a pandemic. During the pandemic, it could serve as an alternative learning strategy forstudents.
Online learning is effective because it can helps teachers to develop classroom virtually (Putranti, 2013).
Online learning can be applied in various lessons, one of them is English. As we know that in English teaching, the teacher uses some methods in delivering materials which aimed learning process does not seem monotonous. Besides, the students do not feel bored in the classroom. By using e-learning, the teachers can provide materials and task as good as possible which aimed students will be more interested. The use of e-learning gives new atmosphere in English teaching. E-Learning is a type of teaching and learning that allows students to convey teaching materials to students using internet, or other computer network media.
E-learning Madrasah is an online learning media provided by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia as an infrastructure in terms
2
of education to divert online learning due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Madrasah e- learning is a free application that was initiated with the aim of supporting the learning process in madrasas so that it can continue during a pandemic. E- Learning Madrasah used by all levels of education under the Ministry of Religion, starting from Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI), Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), to Madrasah Aliyah (MA). With the existence of e- learning Madrasah, it is hoped that learning will be more structured, interesting and interactive. E-Learning Madrasah is used in learning by allowing students to view instructional materials
Provided by teachers, submit assignments as a substitute for face-to- face meeting, and view other learning announcements on the E-Learning Madrasah webpage.
MAN 1 Bengkalis is one of the schools that has used E-Learning Madrasas as a learning media during the Covid-19 pandemic. Activities at the
school use E-Learning Madrasah media. In the learning process students are given teaching materials, then assigned by the teacher and send the results of
the assignment to the application. Students can also see the value they receive from the outcomes of their effort.
By using this system, sometimes there are various problems faced by students, teachers, and even the parents of students. These sudden changes are very influential for the teaching and learning process and student achievement, including in English learning. English learning before and after the Covid-19 pandemic shows a different process, because in the implementation of online
3
learning that is still fairly new. In fact, the implementation of online learning that has not been maximal in schools, or teachers who only give assignments without explaining the material to students will have an impact on students.
The development of students learning at home during the Covid-19 pandemic will tend to be different from the development of learning in schools so that teachers as facilitators must have various innovations, providing motivation for students in carrying out learning activities teaching.
Based on the researchers' observation process, learning at MAN 1 Bengkalis by utilizing E-Learning Madrasah reveals that there are obstacles in the learning process, such as many students who do not understand the material presented by educators through the application, the teacher who are new to the E- Learning Madrasah application and still have difficulty mastering it. According to the study's description, the researchers want to conduct research on the application of Madrasah E-Learning in supporting the teaching and learning process utilized by teachers at MAN 1 Bengkalis. The researcher is interested in various topics, including: (1) How accurate is the description of the E-Learning Madrasah as an application choice that may be used to the greatest extent possible. (2) How does E-Learning Madrasah employ online study in English learning. The unique aspect of this research is the usage of E-Learning Madrasah as a means to speed up the online learning process. The features given by E-Learning Madrasah are highly appealing and simple for users, offering a range of teaching resources to help the learning process. As a result, there are some significant aspects that will serve as a
4
standard for future studies as well as a reference for teachers at MAN 1 Bengkalis.
Based on the background of the problem above, the researcher would like to conduct a research by the title “The Implementation of online learning by Using E-learning Madrasah in English Learning at eleventh grade of MAN 1 Bengkalis”.
B. Identification of the Problem
Based on the explanation above, the researcher identifies the problem of the research is the teacher's role in implementation less than optimum effective in using of E- Learning madrasah as online learning platform.

7 CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. Theoretical Framework 1. Online Learning
Learning is not just limited on a process of reading a book and doing the task. Moreover, Brown (2004) describes learning as the process for getting knowledge of a subject or a skill through study, experience or instruction. In education, learning became the core of the educational process. Learning was an important starting point for exploring the use of technology. In this digital era, learning could be implemented with the technological sophistication that usually called as an online learning (Smart & Cappel, 2006).
Base on Shakshi (2019) Online Learning encompasses a range of technologies such as the worldwide web, email, chat, new groups and texts, audio and video conferencing delivered over computer networks to impart education. It helps the learner to learn at their own pace, according to their own convenience. Online learning defined as learning carried out from distance by technology such as computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet which require internet connection (Gonzales & Louis, 2018). According to Dewi (2020) she explain, online learning is an extension of learning in a network (online) with a learning pattern through the help of an internet network so that there will be interactions in teaching and learning between students and teacher. Online learning means utilizing the use of internet
8
connection to access the material, interaction between teachers and students and help the learning process to get the knowledge, making meaning, and progress with learning experience (Ally, 2008). In the implementation of e-learning needs a structured and paced program of e- tivities for online learning to be successful. The five stage model by Gilly Salmon provides an example of how the participants can comfort in using online learning and what e-moderators needs to do at stage to help them achieve this success. According to Gilly Salmon (2002) five stages of e- tivities in classroom are follows:
a. Access and motivation
Access and motivation are the first stage which help the students become familiar with the online setting by learning how to use course software. There are three aspect of this stage those are access, motivation and arriving
b. Online socialization
Online socialization is activity which builds foundation for online community by using short e-tivites that cultivate trust between students. In this stage, the students create an identity online and finding others to interact. Furthermore, the student’s relationship will grow during group and individual assignment when they share their stories and ideas. According to Irwin (2006) explain that, the value of interaction in online learning lies in its contribution to the teacher and students ability as participant to establish a sense of being in the virtual environment.
9
c. Information exchange
Information exchange is the activity is provided by the teacher to train the students to interact each other in the learning process. In this stage, the teacher should utilize e-tivities to design the assignment that make the students active in e-learning process. The students need assignments that give them opportunities to explore and share knowledge in group discussion. The students give information each other related to the course
d. Knowledge construction
Knowledge construction is the activity which make the students construct their critical thinking skill. In this stage, the teacher develops e- tivities that help the students to use higher order thinking skill and become independent learners. The teacher need to be intentional in their online remarks and aim to enhance the student’s critical thinking skill
e. Development
Development is the activity which help the students review what they have learned by them self. In this stage represents the development of new cognitive skills that enable students to learn to monitor and evaluate their

2. E-Learning Madrasah
E-learning Madrasah is an online learning media provided by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia as an infrastructure in terms of education to divert online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Madrasah e-learning is a free application for Madrasah products that is designed to support the learning process in Madrasah, beginning with Islamic elementary school, Islamic junior high school and Islamic senior high school (Insiyah, 2020). Madrasah E- learning contained many features for supporting the students in new way of learning process by utilizing the technology. It could be accessed by the Madrasah operator (administrator), the headmaster subject teacher, counselling guidance teacher, homeroom teacher, students and staffs from Madrasah or Islamic schools only.
According to Insiyah (2020) she explain that, there are five features contained in e-learning madrasas, namely: madrasah forums, online classes, communication calendars, and notifications:
a. Madrasah Forum
This feature contains a place to create a new class and also a list of classes taught by each teacher, so every student who will teach in an online class must access it. In addition, the madrasah forum menu also contains a video conference, a timeline that can be read by all users of the e-learning application, a list of students and teachers who have been online, additional teacher assignments, and a list of teachers who are currently online in the application.

This study used a survey method that was conducted online with a quantitative descriptive research type. The results are that online mathematics learning activities using elearning madrasah are quite efficient, considering that there are still constraints on the ownership of students' equipment and inadequate internet networks, and students are not maximal in absorbing the material provided. However, the advantages we found were the full support provided by the school, teachers, and parents for ongoing learning. Also, learning mathematics using madrasah e-learning is efficient and flexible so that students can carry out learning well.
The third research by Hammi (2017) with the title "Implementasi Penggunaan Google Classroom pada kelas X IPA SMA 2 KUDUS" concluded the results of research on the application of Google Classrooms in the science class in MAN 2 Holi, the findings, analysis, and discussion were obtained based on the initial objectives of the study. The process of implementing Google Class as a learning media has been well implemented. Google Translation as a learning media that is easy to use and use because it is simple and interesting. Fast access can be used anywhere at any time by installing the Google classroom application via Play Store.
The fourth research is conducted by Johan Widagdo (2015) entitled
“Persepsi Mahasiswa Dalam Implementasi E-learning Menggunakan Web Di Jurusan Teknologi Pendidikan Universitas Negeri Semarang”. This research is qualitative research. This research discuss about students perception toward
16
implementation of web as e-learning to support learning process. The result of this research showed that the students’ perception toward using web as e- learning is positive to motivate the students and also can support teaching learning process.
Meanwhile, in this study the researcher want to conduct a study with the same topic. The difference between these researches and my research are on the variable, subjects of the study, participants, methodology used and platform. Usually, in the previous researches used the kind of general E- learning, whereas this research made use of the new online learning website namely E-learning Madrasah. This research used descriptive qualitative research. Those research are relevant with this study because those research also examining about Google Classroom; thus, they can be used as references.
C. Operational Concept
Operational Concept is one of important things to conducting the research. According to Creswell (2012), it section will concept the literature in the researcher’s mind. This research is descriptive qualitative which focuses on analyzing implementation of online learning by using the E-Learning Madrasah in learning English base on Gilly Salmon. According to Gilly Salmon (2002) explain that, there are five stages of e-tivities in classroom there are access and motivation, online socialization, information exchange, knowledge construction and development.
