vii ABSTRACT

RATNASARI. 2012. Improving the Students’ Writing Skill through Field Trip Method at the Eight Grade Students’ of SMP Negeri 4 Bangkala Barat, Kabupaten Jeneponto (an experimental research). A thesis of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University. Guided by Erwin Akib and Farisha Andi Baso.

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of field trip method can improve the students’ writing skill to write descriptive text in terms of content and organization.

This research employed quasi-experimental method with focused on nonequivalent control group design since control group and experiment group were not chosen randomly. There were two variables, namely independent variable (independent variable was the use of field trip method) and dependent variable (The dependent variable was the students’ writing skill).

The population of this research was the eight grade students’ of SMP Negeri 4 Bangkala Barat in academic year 2016/2017 which consisted of 64 students. The sample were taken by using purposive sampling. The sample of this research were VIII A that consist of 20 students as experimental group and VIII B that consist of 20 students as control group.

The instrument of this research was a written test used in pre-test and post- test. The result of the data indicated that there was a significant improvement of the studen’s writing skill between the students who were taught by using Field Trip method from those who were taught by using Lecture method as the conventional teaching method. The mean score of post-test (33.2) in experimental group was greater than the mean score of post-test (24.5) in controlled group. The value of t-test (4.712) was greater than t-table (2.024) at the level of significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 38. Therefore, hypothesis H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted.

Based on the finding and discussion of this research, the researcher drawn a conclusion that Field Trip Method can improve the students’ writing skill at the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Bangkala Barat, Kab Jeneponto.
