APPLICATION OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE FOR IMPROVING STUDENTS' SKILLS OF WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT IN THE. The purpose of this research is to show that the effectiveness of applying the technique of discussion in small groups to students' writing skills. This result also concluded that the Small Group Discussion Technique was able to improve students' descriptive writing skills.

The researcher will conduct a research that focuses on the application of small group discussion technique to improve the students' writing skill of descriptive text. In accordance with the reason above, the researcher intends a title of this research entitled "Application of small group discussion technique to improve the students' writing descriptive text skill in the tenth graders of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif Nu 05 Pekalongan". Based on the problem identification above, the researcher limited and focused the problem of students' problems in writing descriptive text skill by applying small group discussion technique to the tenth grade of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif NU 05 Pekalongan.

Can small group discussion technique improve students' descriptive text writing skills and their learning activities in the tenth grade of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif NU 05 Pekalongan?”. In accordance with the formulation of the problem above, the objective of the research is to know if the Small Group Discussion Technique can improve students' skills in writing descriptive text and their learning activities. Students can find it easy to create a descriptive text using small group discussion technique, develop their writing skills.

Based on the above theoretical framework above, the researcher formulated the hypothesis of the action of this research as small group discussion technique can improve the students to improve descriptive text skill in the tenth graders of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif NU 05 Pekalongan East Lampung. The results of the students' test were better than the students' test before treatment. In this session the researcher got the result of the students. post-test 1 in cycle I.

The researcher taught as the teacher and the assistant followed the class by observing the activities of the students. Based on the result of classroom action research, the researcher wants to conclude the average of the score of the students of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif NU 05 Pekalongan, the result of the observation form and of the students. It means that the technique of small group discussion could improve the students' writing skills in descriptive text.

In addition, the indicator of this variable is that the students can write in class for descriptive copywriting skills. The total number of teachers here is 17, the principal and the total number of students is 100. Also, while traditional research methods have placed much more emphasis on relating the findings to other settings or populations, action research is more concerned with improvements within the context of the study (i.e. solving a particular problem).

Then the researcher conducts evaluation by using the result of the study to know how far they have improvement. The result of the data had been made continued in the analysis until reflection after research. Based on the cycle 1 evaluation of the weakness felt, and then the action cycle is developed and so on.

The pre-test performed before applying the Small Grup Discussion Technique in the preparation of the study. A kind of pre-test in this study is an essay test that asks the students to write a composition of descriptive text in English. The purpose of the observation is to explain the situation under investigation: activities, people or individuals are involved in an activity and the relationship between them.

In this research, the author will observe the learning process of the eleventh graders of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma‟arif NU 05 Pekalongan in their classroom. During the learning process, the writer will observe the students' activity in learning to write the descriptive text. In this research, the author will do the field note to get the complete data of the tenth grade of SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma‟arif NU 05 Pekalongan about the student activities, events in each learning steps, learning purposes, leaning time, and feelings of the students in the learning process .

Data analysis was performed by averaging pre-test and post-test.

Based on the teacher's experience and the result of descriptive text writing skill test at SMK Wahid Hasyim Ma'arif NU 05 Pekalongan, the researcher concluded that the problem faced by the students is as follows: Many students could not understand the descriptive text . The researcher also planned to provide assessment to measure the extent to which the material that has been taught can be accepted by the students. The topic is about favorite place, favorite sport, favorite animal and favorite friends or teacher that students write in descriptive text.

According to the result of observation above, the learning process was improving because there is difference between the students' activities in the first meeting and the second meeting. Some of the students did not focus on the material and they were still confused to read the text. However, the result was unsatisfactory enough as the students who passed the minimum pass grade were only 8 students (25%) in the pre-test and 12 students (37.5%) in the post-test 1.

Based on the students' result in cycle I, the researcher came to the conclusion that the problem is that the students find it difficult to understand the structure descriptive text. The teacher was active enough in cycle I, but in cycle II the students were active in performing the task. After the researcher gave treatment in the first meeting which consisted of giving material and exercise, the researcher divided the students, a group consisting of 8 people each group and provided the students.

In cycle II, the researcher still worked with the collaborator to observe the students' activities during the learning process. It can be inferred that the learning process has worked well and students were active in the class than in cycle I. Regarding the result in cycle 2, the mean score of students on writing descriptive text skills was improved viz.

After the researcher passed cycle II, the researcher decided not to continue with the forwarding cycle because the result showed that the students' score improved.

Interpretation

Most of the students got the grade ≥75 in a percentage of 45% and there is an improvement in the students' activity. The data in the above table present the result of students' improvement in the ability to write descriptive text. After preparing more materials, students' score improved from posttest I to posttest II which can be seen from the mean ie.

The students could reach the target, most of the students got grade ≥75 in the percentage of 75% and there is also an improvement in the students' activity. It is suggested for the English teacher to use small group discussion technique because this technique is effective in practicing students' skills in writing descriptive texts. CONCLUSSION AND SUGGESTION

Suggestion

After the teacher's explanation about descriptive text, the teacher gives a topic about descriptive text, then the teacher divided some students to discuss the topic. The teacher divided the students into the group discussion, then the teacher asks the students to put the difficult in writing and the teacher helps them. Then the teacher divided the students into a group and the teacher explained the material clearly.

And finally, the teacher gives motivation and spirit to the students to study more diligently.
