serious artist with a large portfolio of ex- hibitedworks
in multiple media,Bob
also enjoyed doodlingon

drawing cartoons for his syllabi.He had
cartoonedsincethe 1950s,butitisprobablyfairtosaythat hiscartooning careerchanged

Trainedinarthistory
and
anthropology, hold- inga Ph.D. in anthropologyand
archaeologyfrom
the University ofNew
Mexico,Bob came
toGeorge Washington
University(GWU)
asan
assistant pro- fessorin 1967.He
alreadyhad
distinguishedhimselfby
findingand
describing in Sciencea possible linkbetween
ancient Siberianspear pointsand
those of the Paleo-Indians.The
evidencehedescribedhad been found
during fieldwork in north Alaska alongside fellowNew Mexico graduate
studentDennis
Stanford.
From
the beginning ofhis teaching career, Bob's interests rangedbeyond
archaeology to thewhole
areaofhow
cultureiscommunicated
through objectsand
visual images.He
put togetheran
inter- disciplinaryarchaeology majoratGWU and
encour-aged one
ofhis fineststudents,Carolyn Rose, tode- velopthenew
fieldofethnographicconservation. In cooperation withtheSmithsonianInstitution,GWU
students
were
trained to study, preserveand
stabilize objects ratherthanrestorethem
totheiroriginal state asartconservatorsare trained to do.Bob
taught coursesinarchaeology,cultures of theArctic, cultureand
the environment, artand
anthropology,and museum
anthropology. Attheend
ofhisfirstyearteaching, thedepartmentchairwroteinBob's annual report:

his department's chair for 12yearsand

from GWU
in 1998,Bob
con- tinued to cartoon for AnthroNotes.We were
editing thiscurrent issuewhen
hedied.Bob
nevertookhimselftooseriously,and
in hiscartoonworld hepokes
funathimself,butalsoatanthropology, anthropologists, cartoonists,
and
cartooning. For example,
one
cartoon illustrationshows
a long line at the registration table for theAmerican
Anthropological Association'sannual
meeting, with various anthropologists waitingtoreg- ister, along withrepresentativesof thesocietiesthey study, including amember
ofourclosest relatives, thechimpanzees.Bob's cartoons often gain their
humor from
his abilityto visually exaggerate
