INDIANA DENTAL COLLEGE.

SESSION Of' 1894-95.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT.

This College belongs to the National Associa- tion of Dental Faculties, and conforms to all its rules and regulations.

The i;ourse in this school extends over three scholastic years, viz.: First, or Freshman ; sec- ond, or Junior; third, or Senior.

The next, or sixteenth annual session, begins on Tuesday, September 11, 1894, and will close the last week in March, 1895. There will be from three to four hours of lectures and recitations, and four to five hours of practical work for stu- dents at the College every day, except Saturday.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION.

Each candidate for admission who does not possess a high-school diploma, or an equivalent from some recognized school, must pass an en- trance examination on the common English branche~, such as Arithmetic, Grammar, Orthog- raphy, Current Topics, Modern History, etc.

Graduates of reputable medical colleges may matriculate as Juniors without examination.

Students holding certificates of attendance and examination from other colleges of the National Association . of Dental Faculties, may enter the Junior or Senior classes, according to the grade given in their certificates.

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION.

The candidate for graduation must have at- tended three full courses of lectures, the last of which shall be at this college. He must be twenty-one years of age and establish a good moral character. He must pass satisfactorily all the required examinations, and convince the pro- fessors and demonstrators of operative and me- chanical dentistry of bis practical ability. During his Senior Year he must prepare a specimen case of prosthetic work to be deposited in the college collection.

The Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery is con- ferred upon those only who fully meet the stated requirements.

COLLEGE FEES.

Tuition complete, each year . . . . $100 Final examination and diploma, Senior Year

only . . . 25 There are no extra incidentals to a course in this institution, the fees stated covering dissect- ing material, chemical apparatus and chemicals, lockers, etc.

CURRICULUM.

The Curriculum in this College embraces Op- erative Dentistry, Dental Embryology, Dental Pathology, Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Mechanical Dentistry, Oral Deformities, Oral Surgery, Conduct of Practice, Ethics, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Dissecting, Bacteriology, Microscopy, Metallurgy, and is arranged as fol- lows:

FIRST OR FRESHMAN YEAR.

OPERATIVE DENTISTRY. -Study of materials and appliances. Hand studies of dental tissues.

Primary course on development of teeth. Pri- mary technique. Freshmen admitted to the Infirmary, with privilege of minor practice only.

Text books recommended; Taft's Operative Dentistry; Black's Dental Anatomy.

PROSTHETIC DENTISTRY.-Consideration of plastic elements employed in dental laboratories.

The working properties of substances used in taking impressions. How to take impressions.

Materials and methods in modeling plates and gums for artificial teeth. Arrangement · and articulation of artificial teeth. Selection of arti- ficial teeth, determining proper or necessary width, length, color and forms for given cases.

Principles of flasking or investing for vulcan- 1zmg. How to pack cases with rubber : combi- nation of various preparations of rubber for effect. Vulcanizing, dressing and finishing plates of rubber. Fitting plates to the mouth. Text book: Richardson's Mechanical Dentistry.

ANATOMY.-Histological, physiological, topo- graphical and surgical anatomy. Osteology- omitting that of the head. Text books : Gray's Anatomy; Holden's Osteology, and Quain's

First Volume. Dissecting required.

PHYSIOLOGY.-Histology of the various tis- sues of the body, illustrated by lantern, charts and crayon sketches. Text books: Dalton's, or

Flint's, or Yeo's Physiology, and Klein's His- tology.

CHEMISTRY.-General and fundamental con- sideration of light, heat and electricity. Metrol- ogy. Specific gravity. Chemical processes, namely: Solution, precipitation, distillation, sub- limation, filtration, evaporation, fusion, calci- nation, incineration, crystallization, etc. Intro- duction to synthesis and inorganic qualitative analysis. Text book : Mitchell's Dental Chem- istry (Revised).

SECOND OR JUNIOR YEAR.

OPERATIVE DENTISTRY.-Dental embryology.

Complete study of dental tissues. Philosophy of development of teeth. Diagnosis and prog- nosis-special. Principles of practice. Text book: Taft's Operative Dentistry. Reference book: Litch's American System of Dentistry.

The Junior Year includes practice in the infirm- ary of the college.

MECHANICAL DENTISTRY. -Adaptation of porcelain gum to the natural ridges by grinding.

Consideration of materials, other than plastic!:, for construction of bases for attachment of teeth, such as gold, silver, platinum and aluminum.

The use of zinc, lead and alloys for models for swaging plates. Soldering. Principles gov- erning retention of plates of teeth in the mouth.' Principles governing articulation of artificial teeth. Modeling cases to restore Jost facial ex- pression. Text books: Richardson's Meehan-

MECHANICAL DENTISTRY-Metallurgy of the dental laboratory. Alloying gold for dental purposes. Refining scrap gold. Reduction of gold to particular forms, such as plate, bar and wire. "Pickling." Constitution of solders, and the use of fluxes in refining and soldering.

Consideration of such specialties as continuous gum work, gold crowning, gold plates, and all styles of bridge work. Text books: Same as fo1 Junior year, also Haskell's Student's Hand-Book.

The work of the Junior year will be reviewed.

BACTERIOLOGY._:_A special course of lectures is annually delivered upon this important sub- ject by Theodore Potter, M. D., A. M., embrac- ing the following: Germs and the germ theory of disease. Their place in biology and pathology.

History of the germ theory. Proofs of germ causation of disease. Cultivation and examina- tion of bacteria. Classification and description of bacteria from a pathological stand-point.

Bacteria of the mouth and neighboring regions.

ORAL SURGERY is becoming daily of more im- portance to dental practice.

H. Oliver, M. D., will deliver a series of valuable and interesting lectures upon this subject to Juniors and Seniors.
