PEDODONTIC DEPARTMENT MEMBERS FILL WIDE-SPREAD ENGAGEMENTS Dr. Ralph E. McDonald presented a continuing education course for the members of the Hawaii Society of Dentistry for Children on the isle of Maui, March 24-26, 1967. Among those attending were former Indiana students Walter Ching, Sanford Asahina, Ernest Scheerer and

John Williford. Dr. Williford, one of Dr. Muhler's students, is

Preventive Dentistry Officer for the Army Pacific Command.

Dr. Paul Starkey is spending the week of April 17th in London, England as a participant in the International Symposium on Child Dental Health, sponsored by the British Pedodontic Society. In addition to participating in the scientific program, Dr. Starkey is representing the American Society of Dentistry for Children.

Dr. Liam P. Convery, who for the past four years has been a graduate student and instructor in the Department of Pedodontics, returned to Dublin, Ireland on April

14, 1967

to accept a position as Junior Consultant in Pedodontics in the Dublin Dental Hospital. Dr. Convery plans to join Dr. Starkey in London to attend the International Symposium on Child Dental Health.

DR. POTTER JOINS PEDO STAFF Dr. Rosario Potter has joined the Department of Pedodontics, effective March 1,

1967.

Dr. Potter received her dental degree from the University of the East, Phillipines, and her Master's degree in Pedodontics from

April 21 , 1967

the University of Oregon. During the past three years, Dr. Potter has been a graduate student in the Department of Medical Genetics and will receive her Master's degree in June.

DEAN HINE ATTENDS MEETINGS

Dr. Maynard K. Hine attended a meeting of the American Association of Dental Schools held in Washington, D. C.

in March. Also, in March, he attended the meeting of the International

Association for Dental Research, and was speaker for the student-alumni meeting of Loma Linda University College of Dentistry, Loma Linda, California.

On April 19th, Dean Hine and Dr. Ralph McDonald went to the Fort Wayne Regional Campus to be present during a visit of the ADA Council on Dental Education.

This visit from the Council was for the purpose of accrediting the dental assistant training program.

Dean Hine will be in San Francisco on May 11 and 12 to attend the International Science Fair.

DENTAL M~TERIALS GRANT

The Department of Dental Materials has received a grant in excess of

$100,000.00 from the United States

Department of Public Health for research in "Acidity of setting cements by ph determination."

MRS. HARVEY HONORED

Mrs. Cleona Harvey received a silver- plated cover for her telephone

receiver in recognition of her 25th anniversary with the Dental School.

The office staff presented her with a lovely crystal and silver vase, and Dr. and Mrs. Hine gave her a rose corsage tied with silver ribbon.

The Complete Denture Department sent flowers to Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Benefiel and Mrs. Chilton on the occasion of their 25th, 20th and 15th respective anniversaries.

ORAL SURGERY STAFF MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN MEETINGS

Several members of the Department of Oral Surgery have participated in dental society meetings recently.

Dr. Ping attended the Alrron-Canton Dental Society in Ohio; Dr. Reddish took part in the meeting of the Southeast Dental Society held in Madison, Indiana, and Dr. Hutton attended the Madison County Medical Society meeting.

DIPLOMATE

Dr. Robert Bigelow was certified recently as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Surgery.

I.U.I.D.

April 28th-29th will be I.U.I.D.

on the Medical Center Campus. These initials stand for Indiana University Indianapolis Days. The event has been arranged by the Student Union Board for the benefit of friends and parents of students throughout the campus. Each campus division will hold open house and will arrange projects or exhibits to demonstrate activities and teaching programs.

CONTINUING EDUCATION T'ne Continuing Education Committee reports that the programs held this year have been exceptionally well attended, and those attending have had praise for course content and participation.

During the week of Apri~ 24th, IUSD will be sponsoring a course concerned with maxillofacial prosthetics. A

symposium on oral diagnosis - oral medicine will be held in Rice Audi- torium on May 3rd. ''Current Concepts in Operative Dentistry" will be the title of a two-day course beginning May 25th. The subject of ortho- dontics will conclude the 1966-67 activities with a segmented arch refresher course on May 31st and June 1st, plus a six-day orthodontics course to begin on June 12th.

The program for 1967-68 is nearly complete and will include a wide variety of multiple day courses, plus a monthly symposium. Again this year, Indiana University School of Dentistry will be well represented in the

regional centers of the state, with seven programs scheduled at present.

COMPLETE DENTURE ACTIVITIES Dr. David Jordan presented a clinic on "Traumatic Occlusion" to the Toledo Dental Society meeting on March 22nd.

The second annual Carl O. Boucher Prosthetic Conference held at Ohio State University, Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, was attended by Dr.

Bailey, Dr. Boone and Dr. Jordan.

"Immediate Dentures" was the subject of a lecture delivered by Dr. James House before the Western District Dental Society at Terre Haute on

April 20th. Dr. House is, at present, conducting an eight-week postgraduate patient participating clinic which takes place each Wednesday in the clinic.

DR. GILMORE REPRESENTS OPERATIVE DENTISTRY IN MANY AREAS Dr. H. William Gilmore presented a lecture on operative dentistry to the Dental Dames on March 8, 1967. On March 14th, he met with the North Side Branch of the Chicago Dental Society, on which occasion he addressed the gathering. He moderated a one-day session on the subject, "The Future of the Restorative Clinical Sciences"

on March 21st which took place during the meeting of the American Associa- tion of Dental Schools in Washington, D. C. On March 22nd, at the general session of the same meeting, he presented a paper on the same topic.

A lecture, "The Amalgam Restoration in Dental Practice," was delivered by Dr. Gilmore at a symposium on dental hygiene held in Rice Auditoriu..~,

Indianapolis, March 30th. The student body of Washington University

School of Dentistry heard him speak on "Preparation of the Surgical Field?!

on April 3rd and a symposium for Indiana Dentists, Indiana State Board of Health, listened to his essay,

Dr. Gilmore was in Ohio on April 10th where he spoke to the Toledo Dental Society, his subject being" Current Concepts for the Amalgam Restoration,"

and on April 11th, the West Suburban Dental Society of Chicago heard his })resentation of "Current Concepts of Operative Dentistry."

GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK

Mrs. Ruth Ann Holloman, dental

assistant in the Operative Dentistry Department, will be leaving May 29th to prepare for a departure to Galveston, Texas where her husband, Joe, will

serve his oral surgery internship and residency.

TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMS The Dental Division of the Indiana State Board of Health has been

active with Inservice Teacher Training Programs which have recently been presented at Delphi, Rising Sun and the Indiana School for the Deaf. Mr.

Gary Gearhart, a recent addition to the Health Education Division, will be working with the dental staff on the inservice programs.

Personnel from the U.S. Public Health Service and other agencies have

visited the dental division to review its activities for use in other areas.

SELF-ADMINISTERED FLUORIDE PROGRAM INITIATED

The dental division of the Indiana State Board of Health is presently initiating a new program of multiple self-administered fluorides within the Fountain County school systems.

Approximately 2100 children, grades 2-8, from three school corporations (Fountain, Covington, and Attica) are participating in the study project.

The purpose of this program is to study the anti-cariogenic benefit of a self-administered therapeutic

prophylaxis paste, a therapeutic rinse, and therapeutic dentifrice in con-

junction with a dental health education program.

The study is "designed" to continue for two to three years. Each child is to receive a thorough dental examination once each year. Parents will be given a referral card if dental care is needed. Those children to receive the self-administered therapeutic prophy- laxis paste will do so on a twice-a- year basis. All children will receive either a control or therapeutic denti- frice. Dental health education will be given in the schools three times a year to those children in the study designated to receive such.

DR. MUMFORD TO GIVE LECTURE SERIES IN JAPAN

Dr. George Mumford will leave for

Japan on May 2nd and will give a series of lectures between then and May 20th, the date on which he is scheduled to return. In preparation for departure he has submitted to an array of shots, the reaction to which, in his opinion, is almost as bad as contracting the disease.

CROWN .AND BRIDGE REFRESHER COURSES

This is the season for refresher courses in the Crown and Bridge

Department. Having recently completed a ceramics course at Indiana University School of Dentistry, a one-day program will be presented in Fort Wayne, as well as a one-day program in South Bend. The subject of each will be

"Partial Dentures."

Dr. Arob Watanavicharn has recently changed her name to Mrs. William Ridge, although she will probably always be

"Dr. Robbie0 to her associates. Her husband is studying for his Ph.Din mathematics in Bloomington. Our congratulations are extended.

WELCOME

Mrs. Shirley Cummins is a new employee in the student office. She is busily engaged in learning the intricacies of evaluating student records.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

Dr. Johnston has been traveling again. This time to lecture to the staff of the VA Hospital in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, then to Philadelphia for a Temple University lecture. He believes the nicest part of going away is returning home.

Dr. Varoujan Tchalian has been

appointed chairman of the membership committee of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Miss Cynthia Pottorff, secretary to Dr. Bailey Davis, recently left her position at Riley Hospital Dental Clinic to take a secretarial position with the U.

s.

Government in Santiago, Chile, South .America. Miss Pottorff came to the Riley Hospital Dental Clinic in June, 1963 and served as appointment clerk and secretary. The staff at Riley will miss Cynthia and wish her well in her new business venture.

The Riley staff welcomes the addition of Mrs. Mary Anne Sipes to their assisting personnel.

STUDENT TABLE CLINIC DAY

Tuesday, April 25th will be the date of Student Table Clinic Day, to be held in the main corridor of the Dental School. The clinics will be held from 2:30 to 5:00 P.M. All members of the faculty, staff, and

student body are encouraged to visit them during that period.

SANDWICH SEMINAR

"Student Evaluation of Dental Teaching"

will be the topic of a sandwich seminar scheduled to take place on Wednesday, April 26th.

Mr. Barton W. Gernandt has resigned from his position in the order department to complete his student teaching assignment. Mr. Stan Crunk will assume the duties formerly assigned to Mr. Gernandt. A new employee in the department is Mr.

Donald L. Johnson.

Oral Diagnosis •...

Donna Browning has transferred to OD from Long Oral Surgery and replaces Lois Dawson.

Dr. Fast attended a meeting of the American Association of Dental Editors held in the new ADA Building in

Chicago, April 2-5. The meeting was attended by some 125 editors of district, state and national dental journals.

E'ndodontics •.••

Dr. Harry J. Healey received an appreciation award from the American Association of Endodontists at its recent annual meeting in St. Louis.

The honor was in recognition of his untiring efforts and interest in the editing and publishing of the

Association's Newsletter for the past fifteen years.

Dr. Healey, Chairman of the Endodontics Department, was in San Juan, Puerto Rico du.ring the spring vacation for the purpose of studying and inspecting the teaching facilities and procedures at the University of Puerto Rico

School of Dentistry.

The Endodontics Department is boasting of its new arrival, Miss Manel Foda, infant daughter of Dr. Salsabyl

Ibrahim and Dr. Yehia Foda. Dr. Ibrahim is a second year graduate student in Endodontics. The baby was born March 3, 1967.

PRESIDENT-ELECT

At the 24th Annual Meeting of the .American Association of Endodontists in St. Louis, Dr. Samuel S. Patterson was installed as President-elect.

In the first floor hall, a coin- operated xerox machine will go into its song and dance for those who feed it a sufficient supply of dimes.

It is for the use of anyone who has material to be duplicated for personal use. Change for operating the machine may be procured from the student

office ..• not from the mimeograph room nor t.he Dean's Office. The

xerox machine located in the mimeograph room is to be used only for official business approved by the department chairmen.

PROF. PHILLIPS FILLS BUSY APRIL SCHEDULE

Professor Phillips traveled to

Morgantown, West Virginia on April 17 where he gave a postgraduate course at the School of Dentistry of the University of West Virginia.

On April 23, he will attend an all-day symposium for the Pennsylvania Society of Dentistry for Children to be held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He will be in Memphis, Tennessee, April 26-27 giving a postgraduate course on

dental materials in operative dentistry at the University of Tennessee, and he will be essa.yist on the program of the Ninth District Dental Society meeting in Westchester, New York, to be held April 29th.
