CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Title Confirmation

As a first step in understanding this research, and to avoid misunderstandings, researchers need to explain several things that will be discussed in this research. The title of the research is "THE INFLUENCE OF INTEREST IN LEARNING AND VOCABULARY MASTERY ON ENGLISH SPEAKING ABILITY AT MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR"

English education has a very important role in developing English speaking skills in students at the upper secondary level, one of whom is "MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR". One of the factors that is believed to influence the ability to speak English is interest in learning and mastery of vocabulary.

Students' interest in learning English can influence their motivation to develop speaking skills. Students who have high interest tend to be more motivated to be actively involved in learning, including speaking English. On the other hand, low interest can be an obstacle to developing speaking skills.

Vocabulary mastery is also an important aspect in developing speaking skills. A broad vocabulary allows students to express their thoughts and concepts more clearly and precisely.

A good understanding of English vocabulary can increase students' confidence in speaking and reduce communicative barriers.

So research on the influence of interest in learning is an important aspect to understand how this factor interacts with the learning process, by also understanding the extent of vocabulary mastery on speaking ability, so that we can identify students who may experience obstacles and develop more effective learning strategies.

B. Background of the Problem

English education in high schools, especially at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR, plays an important role in forming students' communication skills in English. The ability to speak English is a skill that is not only relevant for academic development, but also for their preparation to face future challenges. In an effort to improve the quality of English learning at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR, several aspects are the focus of attention, namely students' learning interest and vocabulary mastery.

Interest in learning is a psychological factor that can influence students' motivation and involvement in the English learning process. Students who have a high interest in learning tend to be more active and enthusiastic in participating in learning, including developing English speaking skills. On the other hand, vocabulary mastery is essential because a strong vocabulary supports the expression of ideas and thoughts in conversation.

However, despite the importance of interest in learning and mastery of vocabulary, it is not clear to what extent the two interact with each other and influence students' English speaking abilities at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR. Therefore, the background to this problem

(4)

encourages the need for research to identify the extent to which learning interest and vocabulary mastery have an influence on students' ability to speak English in the educational environment.

By understanding the relationship between interest in learning, mastery of vocabulary and ability to speak English, it is hoped that this research can provide in-depth insight to schools, teachers and educational policy makers to improve learning strategies that suit the needs of students at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR.

CHAPTER II

FRAME OF THEORY AND HYPOTHESIS

A. Frame of Theory

Student interest in learning is a student's desire or willingness accompanied by deliberate attention and activity which ultimately gives rise to a feeling of pleasure in changing behavior, in the form of knowledge, attitudes and skills. Interest in learning is a feeling of interest and desire for something that arises because of a need. Interest can encourage us to make a choice (Frenzel et al., 2010: 508). Interest can influence the quality of student achievement of learning outcomes. Students who have a great interest in a particular field of study will focus their attention more than other students, thus enabling these students to study harder and ultimately achieve the desired achievements. Students' lack of interest in participating in learning activities will affect the learning process and can cause students to have difficulty learning. According to Dalyono (2009:229) "learning difficulties are a condition where students cannot learn as they should. According to Slameto (2010: 180-181) the way to increase interest in learning is to use existing student interests and provide information to students regarding the relationship between the teaching material that will be given and previous teaching material, explaining its use for students in the future.

The influence of interest in learning can also involve vocabulary mastery on English speaking ability. In line with the opinion of Desiana (2014:1), vocabulary mastery is the activity of mastering or being able to understand and use words in a language, both spoken and written. Mastery also has the meaning of an ability that exists within a person to master and deepen something that is being studied. Meanwhile, vocabulary itself is an important key for anyone who wants to master a particular language, in this case English.

According to "Webster Ninth" vocabulary is a collection of words and phrases usually arranged alphabetically and explained, then according to "Rogert" vocabulary is an alphabetical list of words often interpreted or translated. Vocabulary is related to words that are constructed using linguistic sounds and have meaning to convey information.

So the influence of interest in learning and mastery of vocabulary plays an important role in speaking ability. Therefore, high interest in learning can increase students' motivation to dig deeper into English vocabulary.

B. Hypothesis

The hypothesis used in this research are:

H0 : There is no significant influence between interest in learning English and vocabulary mastery on English speaking ability at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR.

H1 : There is a significant influence between interest in learning English and vocabulary mastery on English speaking ability at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

A. Place and Time of the Research

The place and time of this research was at MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR when I was doing Field Experience Practice (PPL).

B. Research Design

Quantitative research methods used in this research. Quantitative research is a research method using numbers and statistics in data collection and analysis.

C. Population, Sample and Data Collecting Technique

The population of this study involved MA MATHLA'UL ANWAR students. and samples from this population are selected to be taken as research subjects. Then the data collection technique used in this research involved giving questionnaires to students to measure their interest in learning and carrying out vocabulary tests to measure vocabulary mastery. Then, an English speaking ability test can be carried out to measure students' speaking abilities. The data collected from these instruments is then analyzed using statistical techniques such as regression analysis to see the relationship between interest in learning and mastery of vocabulary and the ability to speak English.

D. Operational Definition of Variables

Variable Operational Definition of interest in learning is seen from the enthusiasm, curiosity, or motivation that students show towards learning English, so this variable can be measured using a questionnaire in which students rate their level of interest in learning English on a numerical scale. Likewise the level of proficiency or knowledge that students have in understanding and using English vocabulary. Mastery of this vocabulary can be assessed through a vocabulary test. Then English speaking ability can be evaluated through oral tests where students are involved in tasks such as discussions and presentations in English.

E. Research Instrument

The research instrument used in this research is Questionnaires, which may include items asking students to rate their level of interest in learning English on a Likert scale (e.g., strongly disagree to strongly agree). The assessment is by means of a test which can be given to measure students' vocabulary mastery. This may include multiple choice questions and fill- in-the-blank exercises. Furthermore, assessment rubrics can be developed to evaluate students' English speaking abilities which include criteria such as pronunciation, fluency, use of vocabulary, and accuracy of students' grammar which can be assessed through tasks such as conversations and presentations.
