THE INFLUENCE OF SEATING ARRANGEMENT ON STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION IN ENGLISH LEARNING CLASS

ABSTRAK

Seating arrangement is one of the part classroom management a very important for teachers before the learning process started. The seating arrangement in the classroom can influenced students motivation on teaching learning process. The purpose of this research to find out information how does the seating arrangement influence students motivation in learning process. The kind of this research is descriptive. The population of this research is the students class VIII SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang, that amounts 53 students. Sample of this research using random sampling 10% every class. So, obtained sample 10 students. Used a video and interview as a instrument. The result of the research can conclude that three types of the seating arrangement used by English teacher in SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang, such as, the traditional model arrangement, modular arrangement model and U shape arrangement model. With the variation arrangement used by teacher in the classroom can increase students motivation in during learning. The students feld comfortable when the students seat with the different variation, because the students feld consider by teacher when teaching learning process. The seating arrangement can increase result of students learning.

Pengaturan tempat duduk merupakan salah satu bagian dari pengelolaan ruangan kelas yang sangat penting bagi guru sebelum proses belajar mengajar dimulai. Pengaturan tempat duduk di dalam kelas dapat mempengaruhi siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan informasi bagaimana pengaruh dari pengaturan tempat duduk terhadap motivasi siswa dalam belajar. Jenis dari penelitian ini adalah descriptive. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang, yang berjumlah 53 orang siswa. Sampel penelitian dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik acak, 10% setiap kelasnya. Sehingga diperoleh sampel sebanyak 10 orang siswa.

Instrument yang di pakai adalah video dan interview. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat tiga tipe dari pengaturan tempat duduk yang digunakan guru di dalam kelas dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa belajar di dalam kelas. Siswa merasa lebih nyaman dan tenang ketika belajar pada saat mereka duduk dengan variasi yang berbeda, karena mereka merasa terperhatikanoleh guru ketika proses belajar mengajar sedang berlangsung, dengan adanya motivasi belajar yang dimiliki siswa sehingga dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar.

INTRODUCTION

Classroom management is consistently identified as an important factors in students learning. The teacher may use classroom management as a control power in the classroom to make all activity in the classroom more interactive. The teacher can manage the class effectively based on their creation to make the class condusive in learning process. The seating arrangement as a

part of classroom management can be created and managed by the teacher that can make the class will be fun and

interactive in order to get the students interest in learning English.

Seating arrangement as an important thing in the classroom. The teachers should arrange the students seating, guiding the students

and give motivation to learning English in the classroom. Thus, the teaching and learning can occur in the class as effectively as possible. The variation of seating arrangement in teaching learning process has process to get the students motivation in the classroom. According to Cullen (2012:10), seating arrangement dictate “power and control as well as patterns of communicated.” Students who has motivation is that always communication with their teacher in learning process such as the students always answer the question that given by the teacher, and then showed they idea about something that related to the topic that explained by the teacher, with the seating arrangement the teacher really can improve their students communication in the class to follow the lesson giving more influences toward students motivation in learning process.

Classroom management is important for the teacher to create and manage effectively class to support teaching and learning process. According to Groves (2009:9), classroom management can be defined as the actions teachers take to create and environment that support and facilities both academic and social emotional learning and deals with how well the teacher organized the learning activities and classroom seating.

It mean’s that on the classroom management teacher as a facilitator on the class and the teacher can organized classroom will support learning process.

Seating arrangement is important part in classroom environment to make the students comfortable, active, easy listen and pay attention to the teacher explanation about the lesson. Dunbar (2004:3), mentions that students will be more success for seating next to those who possess positive attitudes towards learning. He argued that the students should be seated were there attention is directed toward the instructor. The students should be able to see the board, writing on the board and instructor and the classroom arrangements should allow for various activity to be conducted. So, the seating arrangement will be influence students succesfull in learning process such as tudents in front of the class can see the board, writing on the board and listen teacher explanatclassroom. Seating arrangement explanation than students seat on the back.

Three types of seating arrangement can used teacher to make the students comfortable in learning process. The first, Traditional model arrangement is a part of classroom seating arrangement usually used by teacher in the

classroom. Seating arrangement all the types can choose teacher on seat environment classroom.

According to Harmer (1998:31), in orderly rows seating arrangement, both teacher and students can see each other clearly and can have eye contact, maintaining disciplines is easies in this seating arrangement. Teacher can also walk up and down if there is anaisle and can have personal interaction with the students. This type of arrangement is suitable for watching a video, using the board, explaining a grammar point, demonstrating text organizations etc where the teacher can work with the whole class. Teacher needs to engange the whole class while working with them in this arrangement and for this teacher must move round. Orderly row is best suited in the classroom make the easily for medium to large classroom. So, it’s that the orderly arrangement in the classroom make the easily interact as well as eye contact between students and teacher in the classroom.

The second, Horshoe arrangement is frequently employed teacher on the smaller class. According to Mark et al (1999:259), explain that question asking was more frequent when the children were seated in the semi – circular arrangement it can be students more active on the learning process, the students listen teacher explain material as well as see board in front of the class.

The third, The modular seating arrangement works best for students interaction and group activities. The modular arrangement model is a part of variation arrangement to make students easily to do discussion in the classroom.

Partin (2009:3) states that, it also asserts that the modular arrangement facilitates group interaction such as a small group discussion and cooperative learning. The modular arrangement is advocated for classes in which students interaction is most important. As we know that the modular seating arrangement can build students group discussion in the learning process, the teacher can make good interaction with students consists the accured students motivation on the group discuss in the classroom.

The seating arrangement is a part of classroom management must be considered by the teacher if the seat not too low, not too big, round, rectangular in accordance with the needs of students and can be changed formation, it will be able to make students learn quetly. Biccard, et al (2012:24), seating arrangement have an important role in improving students’ motivation in learning, where the seating arrangement can be made flexible in such a position in accordance with the need of teaching affective and efficient.

It means that, to increase students motivation in learning, the teacher should be able to create a variety of seating arrangement so students feel comfortable on the teaching learning process.

Motivation is an important for students to learn in the classroom. Teacher must make students interest to learn in the teaching learning process. According to Murphy & Alexander (2000:23), motivation is usually as an internal human arouses, directs, and maintains behavior.

So, motivation is change an individual with the people creation to a purpose realize and motivation can influence of the people to achieve purpose.

On the learning process, students has a characteristics on motivation. According to sardiman, students has a motivation is

So, the students has a good performance on the learning process and has a academic, and can give achievement to progress of the school.

RESEARCH METHOD

The design of this research was qualitative research. According to Gay Mills and Airasian (2012:7), qualitative research is the collection, analysis, and interpretation of comprehensive narrative and visual (nonnumerical) data to gain insight into particular phenomenon interest. Pilot & Hungler (2004:716), descriptive research that have main objective that accurate portrayal of the characteristics of persons situations or group examining people’s words and actions in descriptive ways. It means that, qualitative research is to describe the phenomenon that will be investigated by researcher in order to get answer of the question.

The reseracher done some steps to get the data in the vide, the researcher give some interview research by interviewing the participants, the researcher recorded the result of interview in avoiding data. Participants of this research students eight grade SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang.

In collecting the data the researcher used video and interview to know about types of seating arrangement used by English teacher and how does the seating arrangement influenced students motivation in English learning class.

FINDINGS

Based on the analysis above and related to the research questions, the researcher find out There are three types seating arrangement used by teacher at SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang on the teaching learning process. The first, on traditional arrangement model the teacher support the students motivation by walked around the class.

The students at the back can not answer and write the teacher question. The students at the back lack motivation on the traditional model arrangement model on during learning process. The second, on the modular arrangement used by teacher at SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang after the teacher explained the material, the teacher make a group discussion on the group consists four until five students. The students have easily to learn with group discussion because the students can disscuses with their other when not understanding with the material. Students anthusiams to answer the teacher question. Three, circular arrangement model used English teacher, on the circular arrangement model students can active on the teaching learning process. The students directly raise their hand to answer the teacher question, with the circular arrangement model the students feld considered by the teacher.

The traditional arrangement model, circular arrangement model and modular arrangement can influence students motivation on during learning process. Students active in the classroom when the students seat with the variation model because this variation variation can make students comfortable, fun in the classroom. Students has a motivation in the classroom such as the students active answer the teacher question, the students to do the exercise, giving comments and suggestion on the teaching learning process.

The teacher can easily manage and control the students in the class if the students seat with the modular arrangement model and circular arrangement model. The students active and anthusiams when the students seat with the variation model arrangement.

1.Traditional arrangement model

The teacher easy to walked and down in the classroom. The teacher explain the material and the students focuses look the teacher in front of the class. The teacher support the students motivation by walked arround the class, and then the teacher read a dialogue between sahid and mahendra and the students listen the dialogue, after that the students asked to find asking for help and giving for help related to the teacher dialogue. The students also active in motivation

when they can answered the question by the teacher.

Based on the data the researcher found that two students can answer the teacher question realted on the dialogue have given by teacher in the classroom and students at the back can not answer and write the teacher question.

2.Modular arrangement model

The students has a good interaction with other when they sit in a group, they are can disscuss with a group to do exercise and the students disscuss with a friend about the material teacher given. The modular model the teacher can control students activity on the member group.

The students diciplines in doing do exercise that have been given by the teacher on the teaching learning process and the teacher can controll students activity and the teacher walk and down the students and asked them which one clear enough about the question.

On the modular group discussion the students at the back anthusiams to answer the questions and ten students can answer the task have given by the teacher.

3. Circular arrangement model

The circular arrangement model make the condusive class, with the variation of seating arrangement can make the students comfortable to learn. When the students seat with the variation of seating arrangement can make the students has a high motivation. The teacher can controll and monitor all of the students activity when the teacher give the material.

Based on the data, the researcher found that all of the students in the class anthusiams and active to answer the teacher question related to the material have been give by the teacher when the teacher used a circular arrangement model.

The students directly raise their hand to answer the teacher question on the teaching learning process.

CONCLUSIONS

As explanation in chapter I, the purpose of this research was to describe about the influence of seating arrangement on students motivation in English learning process. The researcher tried to look the answer of research question about the type of seating arrangement used by teacher and how does the seating arrangement influence students motivation. In order to get the purpose of this researcher had

used technique of data collection based on the explanation in chapter III. This research has been taken students eight grade class, had done this research from 13-19 of mei 2016.

The researcher can conclude there are three types of seating arrangement used by teacher on the English learning process. It could be some findings. There class used a traditional arrangement model, modular arrangement model and circular arrangement model it can be seen from data analysis that has been interpreted before. Data from interview showed the students have a high motivation to learn.

SUGGESTION

Based on the research findings and conclusion of the study, the researcher would like to give some suggestion for the English teacher.

In this research can help the teacher to review the influence of variation seating arrangement toward students motivation on English learning, the teacher can used this variation to make the students interest to learn. Secondly, to giving information to the students about seating arrangement can make students more be interactive and active in the class. Overall, this research informs the readers by using seating arrangement the students variation of seating arrangement the students can be active in the class good interest on learning process. The teacher can guide the students motivation if the students has less motivation.
