ABSTRACT

PIRNAWATI. 2019. The Influence of Students’ Anxiety in Speaking English at Junior High School. A Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. Supervised by H.M Arief Paturusi and Andi Asri Jumiaty.

This research aimed to find out the influence of students’ anxiety in speaking English especially in terms of fluency and accurasy of pronountiation. The population of this research was the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 02 Arungkeke in academic year 2018/2019 with 25 sample that selected by using purposive sampling technique. The method used in this research was quantitative method. The instrument used was two type questionnaires that used to measure the 10 of students who have higher anxiety then the other students/sample and speaking test that used to measure the influence of students’ anxiety in speaking in terms of fluency and accurasy of pronountiation. Both of data were analyzed by using mean score and persentage formula to calculate the data from questionnaire and speaking test about the influence of students’anxiety in speaking in terms of fluency and accurasy.

The result showed that about the influence of students’anxiety in speaking at the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 02 Arungkeke was fairly with the mean score was 5,8 in fluency and poor with the mean score was 4,6 in accurasy. Meanwhile in questionnaire 87% students feel very anxious when speak in front of people. It can be concluded that there was very strong influence of students’anxiety in students’ performance in English class at the eight grade students of SMPN Negeri 02 Arungkeke in academic year 2018/2019.
