ATTEND CONFERENCE-WORKSHOP

Dean Hine, Doctors Standish, Mitchell and Compton attended the Fourth

Conference Workshop for Dental Edu••·

cators on ''The Strategy of Clinical Research" held at the Stouffer's Inn, Indianapolis, June 30 -

July 3, 1968. This conference was made possible through the generous cooperation of the Eli Lilly Company.

ASDC CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINAR

Dr. Paul Starkey is spending the week of July 15th in Chicago, where he is acting as Co-Administrator of a

Continuing Education Seminar, sponsored by the American Society of Dentistry for Children. The Seminar is being held in the ADA Building and an official representative from each one of the 50 State Units of the ASDC is participating. In addition,

there are 25 non-subsidized participants.

The faculty are all members of the American Academy of Pedodontics.

APPOINTED VISITING PROFESSOR

Professor Ralph W. Phillips has been appointed a visiting professor on the faculty of the School of Dentistry Louisiana State University in New Orleans. During the Fall, he will present a series of four lectures on materials science to the undergraduate and graduate students at that

University.

On Thursday, June 27th, twelve senior dental students from the Uni- versity of Guatemala, who are visiting the United States under the sponsorship of the International Exchange Program, visited the Indiana University School of Dentistry for a day-long Program.

Doctors, McDonald, Boyd, Hasler, Dykema, and Mercer participated in the Program, which in part described the under-

graduate education program at I.U.S.D.

The students and their sponsors toured the medical center facilities and were later luncheon guests of Dean Hine.

REMINDER TO FACULTY!

At this time, letters including the registration blank have been sent to all faculty members for the Fourth .Annual Teaching Conference of the

Indiana University School of Dentistry.

The conference will, again this year, be held at the Spring Mill Inn,

Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell, Indiana, September 7 - 9, 1968. It would be appreciated if you would complete and return your registration form, with your fee, to Dr. Drexell Boyd, Chairman of the Registration and Housing Committee, at your earliest convenience. This will help Dr. Boyd in completing the room assignments, etc.

APPRECIATION

Dr. Ralph Beatty and his family wish to express appreciation to members of the faculty for sympathy extended by a

floral tribute on the loss of his Mother.

PARLIAMENJ1ARY LAW COURSE IN PROGRESS

A special course, "Introduction to Parliamentary Law," is presently being conducted by Mrs. Walter H. Vinzant, a registered parliamentarian, who is assisting the enrolees in becoming more familiar with the techniques of presiding or otherwise participating in a properly conducted meeting. The program is being held in room #114 of the dental school, 4:00 - 6:00 P.M.

DENTAL MANUFACTURING COMPANIES VISITED BY FACULTY MEMBERS Doctors Dykema, House and Bogan recently made a trip which included visits to the Weber, S.S. White, Ritter and Midwest American Dental Manufacturing Companies. The purpose of these visits was to review both currently-available major dental equipment and to discover what the various companies anticipate will be in production at the time when we will be ready to equip a new addition to the dental school.

WELCOME TO PEDODONTICS

The Pedodontic Department extends a

"welcome" to three new dental assistants who have joined the staff recently.

Miss Nancy Thompson and Miss Jeanette Langacher have completed their formal training at the Fort Wayne Regional Campus and Miss Cathy Fogleman joins us after completing her training at the Harry E. Wood School. Welcome to all!

PITCH-IN SUPPER

A pitch-in supper was held at the home of Dr. Richard .Misselhorn by the

clinic staff. A most interesting tour and lecture on antiques was given by the host.

DR. TIFFANY OPENS OFFICE

Dr. George Tiffany of the operative dentistry staff has opened a new

part-time dental practice at 10447 North College Avenue, Indianapolis.

CONGRATULATIONS

Our congratulations and best wishes to Miss Suzanne Leland (a -dental assistant in the Pedodontic Department for some six years) who will be

married to Mr. Thomas Raper, Sunday, August 4, 1968 at the Second Presbyterian Church located at 7700 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis. They will reside in Richmond, Indiana where Mr. Raper is in business.

DR. CHALIAN TO SPEND SUMMER ON S.S. HOPE

Dr. Varoujan A. Chalian departed on June 29 to spend two months as a rotator on the S.S. Hope which will be anchored in Ceylon. While Dr. Chalian is in Ceylon, he will be giving a series of lectures at Ceylonese University and he will lecture and treat patients aboard the ship.

A FAREWELL AND A WELCOME

Mrs. Gail Aldefer of the Dean's Office resigned June 14 to return with her husband to their home in Pennsylvania following his two-year assignment with General Hospital. It is with regret that we bid Gail adieu, even as we

extend wishes of welcome to Mrs. Beverly J. Hoover who is replacing her.

DEAN HINE ATTENDS JUNE MEETINGS On June 14, Dean Hine was in Washington, D. C. to attend a meeting of the

advisory council of the National Institute for Dental Research. He attended a

meeting of the Commission on Health of the state universities and land grant colleges which was held in Kansas City on June 22. He was in Chicago on June 28, where he attended a meeting of the research committee of the American Dental Association.

DR. HAM SERVES AT FORT LEWIS

Dr. John W. Ham of the Department of Endodontics was recalled in mid-June for two weeks of active duty in the Army Dental Corps at Fort Lewis, Washington.

LIBRARY NOTES

Miss Betsy Nash joined the library staff for the early summer months and has been engaged in the task of title verification of the many currently received periodicals. She will be leaving this assignment in early August. Miss Doris Jones, a new- comer from Detroit, is welcomed as a permanent addition to the staff.

Her duties will be concerned with technical processing.

Mrs. Helen Campbell's activities will be temporarily curtailed as she

recuperates from a broken arm suffered from a fall on June 29.

We wish you a speedy recovery.

NEWS FROM THE DENTAL DIVISION INDIANA STATE BOARD OF HEALTH Fluoridation of the water supply of Ligonier is underway, while Warsaw and Winona Lake have plans submitted, approved, and ready for the beginning of such a program.

Summer topical fluoride programs are being carried out in Bartholomew, Putnam, Starke, Vermillion, Lagrange, Parke, Steuben, Elkhart, and Dearborn counties.

The dental facilities of all correction- al institutions are being surveyed this summer.

Miss Karoline Becker, a graduate student from Columbia University, New York, is here for the summer to take field training in community dental health.

VISITOR FROM

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON Dr. James Steiner, who will be

responsible for directing the graduate endodontic program at the University

of Washington, Seattle, visited IUSD recently for the purpose of studying the graduate education program in endodontics as presented at IUSD. While here, Dr.

Steiner conducted a seminar type

discussion on the calcium hydroxide root induction procedure.

DR. GILMORE FILLS BUSY SPRING, EARLY SUMMER SCHEDULE On April 25, Dr. William Gilmore

presented a one-day course to the third annual Madison-St. Clair Bi-District meeting in East Alton, Illinois. He was in Omaha, Nebraska on April

where he lectured to the student body of Creighton University, and as an invited guest, gave two gold ~oil patient demonstrations to the Woodbury Study Club. Dr. Gilmore lectured to the student body of the University of Buffalo on April 29 and on April 30 and May 1, he was an essayist for the Michigan State Dental Association in Detroit, his subject being, "The

Selection and Uses of Silver Amalgam."

Dr. Gilmore presented a one-day course to the U.S. Naval Dental School

restorative seminar in Bethesda, Maryland on May

a scientific session on "New Concepts for .Amalgam Restoration with Special Emphasis on Cavity Preparation"

to the Illinois State Dental Association in Springfield, and9 with guest lecturer Dr. Carl Monacelli, he presented a one- day post-graduate course on cast gold inlay restorations for IUSD. He served as director for the Hollenback Study Club and consulted for Ohio State University on June 5th and on June

he consulted for the Kerr Manufacturing Company in Detroit.

ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM CROWN AND BRIDGE

As of July 1, Dr. Mumford left

Indianapolis to take an appointment at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. He will be the

Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Arob Ridge will join his staff there beginning September 1.

Best of luck is wished on these new assignments.

Dr. Alfred Sotera has left for his new appointment with the Public Health Department.

Dr. Gilberto Hanke will shortly be returning to Brazil to resume his practice there.

MORE FROM CROWN AND BRIDGE

Familiar faces will be seen in the Crown and Bridge Department, as old friends assume fresh duties. Dr.

Robert Bogan again joins the staff for two half-days per week as an instructor, Dr. Cunningham will also join the staff on September 1, and Dr. Rush Bailey is now instructing in the clinic. Welcome is extended to all.

PLANS VISIT TO ENGLAND

In mid-July, Marge Smith plans a trip back to the land of her birth,

England, to visit relatives and tour the Isle.

INDIANA BELL CONDUCTS COMMUNICATIONS SEMINARS

At the invitation of the Bell Telephone Company, the week of July 15 through 19, Doctors Klein, Kasle, Maurice Healey, Boyd, Fast, Garner, Boone, Burstone

and Compton and Mr. Dwight MacPherson of the Indiana University School of Dentistry will attend a "To Educate is to Communicate" seminar. These are one-day seminars, in which they will be examining several educational communications problems on a case history basi.s and demonstrating the techniques involved. Educational television, computer retrieval for programmed learning, and the TELE-

LECTURE concept coupled with Telewriting are a few of the demonstrations that will be made.
