THREE INTERESTING ADDITIONS TO THE CRINOID FAUNA OF SAGAMI BAY AND SURUGA GULF, JAPAN.

During the
lastcentury
thewonderfully
richmarine fauna
ofsouthern Japan has
receivedmore
attentionthan
thefauna
ofany other
portion ofthe
vast Indo-Pacific area.The
Britishsteamer "Challenger" took
afew dredge hauls
there,the Swedish steamer
' 'Vega
' 'hrought back some
interestingspecimens, while the United
Statessteamer "Albatross" on two
cruises sixteenyears
apart,and the Japanese yacht Golden Hind
' ' in investigationscovering a long
series of years,have done
considerable intensivework. Individual
efforthas
figured largely in increasingour knowledge
ofthe Japanese fauna; among
foreign investigatorsvon
Siebold,Stimpson, Hilgendorf, E.
S.Morse, Alan Owston, Doderlein,
Dofleinand Haberer
in particularhave made
extensivecollec- tions,while
theirwork has been supplemented,
especially in later years,by
that ofa
largenumber
of ableand
energeticJapanese
naturalists.And
yetthe
possibilities of thisfauna
areby no means exhausted,
for interestingnew forms
areconstantly coming
to light in all classes.Of
the three crinoidsherein
describedtwo were
collectedby
Professor Doflein, the thirdby Mr. Alan Owston
; the last represents agenus, the other two
specificgroups
in their respec- tive genera, hithertounknown from Japan.
Cotnantheria
intermedia new
species.Thisspecies in general structure resembles C. hriareus, C. rotula
and
C. weberi.
The arms
vary innumber
from thirty-one to forty-eight, theaveragenumber
being forty; the division seriesand

to 180mm.
long, the average length being about145mm.
The

across the concave dorsal pole; thecirrus sockets arearrangedintwoand
apartial thirdcloselycrowdedalternating rows.The
cirrireach amaximum
of xxxii in number, but usually there are only afewwell developed, the majority beingmore
or lessrudimentary;in general they resemble the cirri of C. tveberi but they are
much more
slender,
much
lesscurveddistally, and arecomposed
ofalargernumber
ofsegments; the proportionate
number
ofmore
orlessrudimentarycirriisgreaterin thisform thanin C. weberi.
The
cirri are from 18mm.
to .30mm.
in length (usually between 23mm. and
26mm.), and
arecom-
posed of from 20 to 28 (usually 24-26) segmentsof whichthelongest, in theproximal portion, are about one third again as long as broad,and
theouter, from abouttheeleventhonward, abouttwiceasbroadas long, the transition from theone type to the other being ratherabrupt; the short outersegments havethe dorsal surface convexin profile view, themaximum
heightofthisconvexity beingat first atthe distalendof the segments, but graduallymoving
proximally so that the distal segments are provided with low bluntmedian
tubercles; the opposing spine is transversely elongate.Type.

beyond
about the middle of the cirrus each segment bears a straightmedian
serrate transverse ridge; viewed from theendsof thesegments these transverse ridges usuallyshow
amore
orlessconvex profile, though onsome
of the cirritheymay
benearlystraight; distallythese ridgesbecome
gradually narrower,on
theantepenultimate segments beingcommonly
representedby
sUghtmedian
tubercles;theopposingspineisterminal orsubterminal;erect, inheight equaltoabout halfthedistaldiameterofthepenultimate segment, though sometimes longer; its base occupies nearly or quite all of the dorsal surface ofthe penultimate segment; the terminal claw is
about as long as the penultimate segment,stout in theproximal third, but slender in the distal two-thirds,
which
portion usually is rather abruptly bentdownward.
The
tenarms
areprobably between55mm. and
60mm.
long.The
radials are even with the edge of thecentrodorsal; the IBrj are short, about four times as broad as themedian
length,which is about onethird lessthan thelateral length; the lateral edges arestraight,and
inapposition; the IBr2 (axillary) is rhombic, broader than long; the first brachial is short,trapezoidal, twice aslong exteriorlyas interiorly, the inner edges united for about the proximal two-thirds; the second brachial is larger, irregularly quadrate; the third
and
fourth brachials form a syzygial pairwhich
is slightlylonger internallythanexternally, nearly or quite twice as broad as the lesser (exterior) length; thenext two brachials areslightlywedge-shaped, three or four times as long as themedian
diameter,and
the followingbecome more and more
pro- nouncedly wedge-shapedand
after the fourteenth triangular, about as longasbroad,and
distally wedge-shapedagain,and
shghtly longerthan broad. Syzygies occur between the thirdand
fourth brachials, again betweenthe thirteenthand
fourteenth(sometimes betweentheninthand
tenth or tenthand
eleventh),and
distally at intervals of from four to seven (usuallyfive)oblique musculararticulations.Pi is8
mm.
longwithfourteensegmentsofwhich
thefirstishalfagain asbroadas long,thesecond isslightlytrapezoidal, half again aslongas thedistaldiameter, the thirdistwiceaslongasbroad,and
theremainder arefromthreetofourtimesaslongasbroad; theseventhand
following haveveryprominentlyevertedand
spinousoverlappingdistaledges.Pz

long with sixteen segments, similartoPi but withthesegments proportionatelyslightlyshorter; the sixthand
followinghaveveryprom-
inently evertedand
spinousdistal edges. P3 is8mm.

following pinnules resemble P5, but gradually increase in length so that the distal pinnules are 8mm.

areabout twiceas longasbroad,with producedand
spinousdistaledges; thetwoterminal segments of the distal pinnules are rather abruptly smallerand more
slenderthanthe preceding.The
color is purple, the cirri yellow, each segment with amedian
ventral purple saddle; regeneratedarms
