The internship program undertaken by the writer spanned approximately three months from April 14, 2014 to July 7, 2014.

The writer completed an internship program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies located at Jalan Tanah Abang III No. The writer was assigned to the position of intern at the Department of Politics and International Relations. The institution not only covers domestic economic and political issues, but has also been involved in several bilateral and multilateral initiatives such as the ASEAN Institutes for Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN-ISIS), the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and the Council for Security Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific (CSCAP) and also with civil society organizations since the 1980s. The underlying philosophy of this mission is the belief that long-term planning for Indonesia requires "a deep understanding of economic, political and social issues, including regional and international development". To achieve this mission, CSIS conducts research in economics, politics, and international relations, supported by a broad network of research and academic organizations.

The Executive Director (acting: Rizal Sukma) is responsible for coordinating and directing the activities of the entire organization. The researchers are then formally divided into two departments: the Department of Economics and the Department of Politics and International Relations. Both departments are led by heads who are researchers appointed by the council.

Although the purpose of the separation is academic and organizational in nature, multidisciplinary research and collaboration between departments is strongly encouraged and common.

Internship Activities

Chapter Description

Elaboration of Internship Activities

During this activity, the writer learned how to construct interview questions based on specific research objectives. The writer also gained a better understanding of the rules of publication used in journals, including formatting and the use of diction. During the internship, the writer participated in three important information gathering activities.

Cases of information gathering done on the author's own will will not be included in the report. The nature of the institution as a think tank enabled the author to interact with people from various academic backgrounds, e.g. This helped a lot in the author's search for a suitable thesis topic, which the author already decided on during the first month of the internship.

The writer believes that the internship contributed to the development of several important interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. Prior to the internship, the writer had the ambition to work as a researcher or teacher in science. The internship greatly influenced the writer to continue pursuing the above-mentioned writer's career goals.

The last part, "Additional benefits", evaluates the benefits that the institution provides to the writer. After submitting the credentials, the writer had to wait for the verification process to complete. During the internship, the writer had a lot of free time between assignments.

The networks built during the internship period also add to the list of utilities owned by the author. Regarding the preparation before the internship program, the author strongly feels that the preparations provided by the university are insufficient.

Personal Results and Evaluation

Chapter Description

This chapter covers the personal outcomes that the writer believes they have achieved during the internship, as well as the writer's personal evaluation of the internship.

Personal Results

Listening to the interviews and making the transcripts provided the writer with the knowledge of constructing questionnaires aimed at specific research objectives. Interning at a think-tank not only provided the writer with academic skills and techniques, but also gave him the freedom to explore academic areas unrelated to the writer's university program of study. While the writer is officially studying international relations, the abundance of printed source material available in the institution's library has allowed the writer to explore in depth not only international relations and politics, but also economics, sociology and social psychology.

The internship has helped the writer to recognize the writer's inherent strengths and weaknesses, while helping the writer to compensate for weaknesses and take full advantage of strengths. For example, during the article writing task, the writer realized that the writer had difficulty collaborating ideas with the other interns. To circumvent this weakness, the writer chose to write down their own ideas in the article's draft and then let the other interns decide whether the writer's ideas fit the article.

Other interns also urge the writer to be more vocal in expressing ideas, a move that has helped the writer significantly. Interacting with people from different backgrounds helped the writer develop more interpersonal skills, especially understanding and tolerance. Informal chat and field trips with interns coming from the United States, Canada and the Netherlands helped the writer to understand the customs of the respective countries and to tolerate several customs practiced in the aforementioned countries but not in Indonesia.

Discussions with researchers who have different political and academic views helped the author to develop a broader understanding of issues in the academic world. 14 learned social techniques used in formal meetings, such as the use of business cards and socializing techniques that will be useful in the future. In addition, the internship also provided a possible opening for a career option should the author be interested in future work at the institution.

Evaluation of the internship

When the writer had been accepted as an intern, the writer was given a fairly brief briefing on the rules of the game during the internship period, such as working hours, job description and benefits. The scribe is only assigned tasks when a requesting party asks the scribe to perform a specific task, even if the scribe has tried to take the initiative to ask around the office. Despite the light workload, the writer considers the assignments to be of significant importance and related to the writer's interests.

16 data entry from a set of Indonesian Armed Forces reports appears to be physically unstimulating, the task was related to the writer's interests and was considered fulfilling because the writer had the opportunity to understand the practical uses of the theory taught in the classroom. The range of tasks assigned to the writer during the internship period coincided with what the writer required from an internship at an institution working in the field of academia. However, as compensation, the writer was given food in the form of free lunch held in a designated dining hall on its premises.

After completing an internship program for three months, the writer concludes that the internship has proven to benefit the writer positively. By performing tasks such as producing transcripts, writing articles, and gathering information, the writer has experienced improvements in interpersonal, interpersonal, academic, and technical skills that have added to the writer's repertoire of usable skills in the future. The writer has also been able to explore different career options through interaction with scholars and figures from different backgrounds.

The author knew CSIS through a recommendation from a lecturer at the university, not the ICC, which is the official body responsible for handling internships. 18 materials and explanations provided by the ICC were quite inadequate to prepare the writer for the actual internship program. Also often, while information from the ICC was properly disseminated, the information disseminated often conflicted with information disseminated from the author's Study Program, leading to confusion about several key details of the program, viz.

For potential interns, especially President University students, the author strongly recommends completing an internship program at CSIS. For those seeking an internship that offers monetary compensation, people-oriented assignments, or physically stimulating assignments, the author does not recommend CSIS as a place to intern.

Conclusion

Recommendations

In the future, ICC should consider improving communication with the parties involved to reduce the possibility of communication problems reaching students. ICC should also consider a longer and more comprehensive pre-course to better prepare students before the program begins. However, this recommendation only applies if prospective interns are seeking experience in academia and research.
