Grading System
In rare cases, a student may use the Pass/Fail option for a portion of the general education requirement. Other programs may allow limited use of the Pass/Fail option for department electives required for the major.
Semester and Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
Instructors are not involved in the decision to use the Pass/Fail option and are not informed that the student is taking a course on a Pass/Fail basis. Once a student requests that a course be taken Pass/Fail, the student cannot request that the Pass/Fail option be reversed.
Undergraduate Class Standing 0–25 credit hours = Freshman
At some schools, pass/fail courses cannot be used to fulfill general education or major or minor requirements. The student must submit the signed pass/fail forms to the Registrar by the deadline specified in the Registration Guide.

In effect, the student starts with a cumulative GPA of 0.0, after which all the rules of academic probation and dismissal will apply.
Dropping or Adding Classes (Schedule Adjustments)
Exemption may be claimed only once and does not prevent the student from using other grade replacement options available for assignments completed after the exemption was granted. Visit the Registrar's website (registrar.iupui.edu/ .forgive.html) to view the complete policy.
