ABSTRACT

A Van Dijk’s Socio Cognitive Approach on Emma Watson Speech on Gender Equality in One Young World Forum 2016

Women have been discriminated and portrayed as weak actor over and over.

In order to get recognized as an individual that is equal to men, women build a movement to support women’ rights and protect women from any violation that can be occurred anywhere. The movement called as feminist movement;

feminist movement has a lot of members that came from different backgrounds.

One of the famous feminist activists is Emma Watson, an actress who became a feminist activist after she launched her first campaign called as #HeForShe movement in 2014. In 2016 Emma was invited to be one of the speakers in One Young world Forum that aimed to educate youth from across the nations to talk about the problems that are faced in the world. One of the issues that was discussed in the forum is gender equality. Emma Watson as a speaker of the forum gave a speech of gender equality that is powerful enough to make the audiences listen to her.

The objective of the research was to reveal the ideology of Emma Watson and the way she expressed her ideology in One Young World Forum 2016. The objective could be achieved by Critical Discourse Analysis as a tool. The findings figured out that the ideology of Emma Watson is a feminist ideology that aiming for gender equal world and she used implicit method to sway the audience to follow her ideology such as how she structures her speech and the rhetoric that she used in the speech.
