Our View
A different approach
After mare then SO ye a n of dreams, Indianapolis' Monument Circle has finally been given a new look. And, as anyone who has seen the completed project can tell you, the result is mighty attractive.
The aim of the Circle beautification project was to attract bus
iness to the downtown area. This particular tack has been taken before in other cities (Fort Wayne, Indiana and Springfield, Illinois to name a couple).
The difference between the the approach that those cities took and the one Indianapolis did is that after they laid their bricks and planted their trees, the other dosed the areas off to all but pedestrian traffic—something that some Indianapolis dtixens would very much like to do here.
There’s a problem, however. The d ty ’s downtown mer
chants—particularly those whose businesses are on the C ir c le - sunk down some big bucks of their own into the beautification project on the condition that the Circle not be dosed to traffic.
And Mayor Hudnut promised them it would not.
So, there are three basic points of view: that of those who want the Circle dosed to keep motor vehicles from uglifying it; the merchants', who want to make sure customers can get to their stores; and Mayor Hudnut’s, who wants to keep his promise to the merchants.
A compromise seems to be in order here, and the ooe which comes to mind immediatdy Involves assuring the merchants that if the Circle was dosed to traffic, customers could easily find places to pork within walking distance to their destinations, and at low cost.
In Springfield, there is a parking garage beneath the mall.
That approach is obviously impractical for Indianapolis, though, so bow about this: Use the streets that lead into the Circle far diagonal parking, at a nominal charge. Perhaps small shuttle buses could even be used to get parcel-laden shoppers from one place to another.
It would make us happy to see such a plan im plem ented-it seems like such a shame for all those nice, new, expensive bricks to be covered up by automotive by-products.

The color of a full moon
by S. Cooper I first heard about her from Herbie, an acquaintance of a few years, and generally a pretty level
headed guy W e w ere at a party at h a house which was a 'w e lc o m e hom e” affair for his b enefit A m onth earlier, w e d had a going away party for him as he was supposed to be leaving to be an nsurance salesman m Kalamazoo, Michigan
N o b o d y knew w hy he wanted to be an insurance salesman, and nob o d y knew w hy he wanted to live m Kalamazoo. Even Herbie didn't know w hy. A n d although he never left w e felt it was necessary (and a good excuse for another party) to w elcom e him back.
The w hole episode, as Herbie tells it began a m onth earlier w hen a lady he was seeing gave him a necklace. She was described as no ordinary w om an, with pale complexion and flowing hair, predominantly brunette, with strands here and there of every color imaginable, and always dressed in long, flowing black gowns. A n d the necklace, according to m y friend, was no ordinary piece of jewelry.
Herbie swears "o n the old country” (being of Slavic descent this cam es the solemnity of generations) that the m om ent he put that necklace on, his life turned to mud.
W ithin a week, he: w recked his new car which, although no damage was don e to the engine, w ould not start; was told that the house he was renting was being sold and he w ou ld have to move, lost his job at the post office because h a alarm clock unexpiainabiy w ou ld only w ork in the afternoons and evenings, fell d o w n a stairway w hen he tripped over ‘ something that wasn't there”
and broke h a collarbone; and lost his d o g
Finally. Herbie said, he realized that the necklace was the cause. So he d ug a hole in his backyard, threw in the necklace, covered it with gasoline and burned i t He then refilled the hole and tamped it d o w n tighdy After he had d one tha. he says ha life returned to normal.
So. w h o was this lady? I asked Herbie for her number Which he gave reluctantly, along with instructions o n h o w to get her on
the phone. Seems she will not answer if you call and let it ring Yo u have to k now the c ode which involves dialing the num ber no less than four times.
As I w orked m y w ay through it, I had tha strange feeling that m y brain was being scanned. I can’t explain it, but the thought occurred to m e that the reason for her elaborate code was to allow her tune to tune in on the caller before she answered.
W h e n I finally got her on the line, she answered questions almost before I asked them, and in what seemed like only a few seconds, w e had arranged a meeting. She had insisted on a night meeting and had refused m y offer to go to her house. A n d so, w e scheduled an 11 pm rendezvous at the overlook by the new Westfield Boulevard b n d g e m Broad Ripple.
Being a little anxious. I found myself there ten minutes early, and seeing n o one around. I parked m y car and w alked d o w n the em bankment towards the shallow rapids of W hite River. The autumn everxng cfxHed me as I stepped over
on a clear night
the large rocks and w atched the mist rise over the water
Suddenly, I heard the sound of granite on quartz behind me, and w hen I turned, there she stood not five feet away. A quick glance to the parking lot puzzled m e as m y car was alone o n the asphalt square, and I w ondered h o w she was able to co m e u p o n m e I A e that
Introduction consoled of an exchange of smiles and a feeble " h r from myself, and she then led m e to a large boulder with a flat edge where w e b oth sat dow n.
She looked as I expected, dressed in black and w ith lo n g straight hair.
But Herbie hadn t told m e about her eyes. The y w ere the co lo r of a full m oo n o n a clear night and as she sat beside me, their reflection seemed almost brighter than their source. The y g low ed w ith the confidence of one w h o is always in control.
She talked of astrology, num erology, U ro t cards and p a lm „ reading as ail being parts of a w hole She said that they all have to be studied together. A n d she
added that not just anyone can be really good at it. for you needed a certain am ount of psychic ability for anything to make sense
As she talked, I couldn't help but have this calm and peaceful feeling that seemed to be triggered by her presence. W henever she turned her head towards m e, those eyes of hers w ou ld flash as they crossed ^ the moonlight. A n d whenever I asked her a question she didn’t want to answer, she w ou ld just smile and remain silent
After about a half h our of conversation, I suddenly found myself propelled into a standing position as if the rock I’d been sitting on had just caught fire She looked at m e smiling and with her arm outstretched, she opened her hand to reveal a necklace m her palm.
"Tha is for y o u .' she said I picked up the necklace cautiously and walked a few paces to examine it in the moonlight.
W h e n I turned around to thank her, she had vanished.
I stood for a very lo ng time frozen and listening But I heard n othing
