In the end of the research, it found that there is a spatial control having protective characteristic or a control of spatial protection conducted by the community. Socio- religious values have influenced in strengthening socio-religious space that produces immaterial products associated with the community’s mentality. Meanwhile, the modernization-capitalization pressures influence the form of significantly developed busi- ness-commercial space, and their products are eventually used to support the socio-religious activities. Spatial protection strategy is an answer for the problem of modernization-capitalization pressures in downtown. This finding could be a useful input for the preservation efforts at Kauman Semarang particularly and for cities having similar problems generally.

Introduction

The influx of foreign capital as the global expan- sion affects the homogenizing in built environment (Samalavicius 2017), an alson in people’s economics, and social structure (Santoso 2013; Zahnd 2006). The uncontrolled development of capitalistic economic space in downtown has pushed the changing of urban functions, especially the social space. It will eventually trigger a cultural lag (Ishomudin 2005), creating both a place and non-place (Tomlinson 1999). The efforts to strengthen, maintain, and develop the local identities of a city are needed to ensure the social harmonization (Hayden 1995; Arefi 1999; Serageldin 2001; Yuwono, Wardiningsih 2016).

Settlement is defined as a dwelling space having a socio-cultural relationship, transcendental aspects, and communication (Rapoport 1983; Snyder, Catanese 1979; Hayden 1995; Budihardjo 2006). Furthermore, in order to overcome ‘placelessness. Arefi (1999) sug- gested two choices namely emphasizing the architec- tural landscape and developing the culture. Further physiology of space namely place attachment and place

identity should be concerned in the making of the spir- it of place (Hidalgo, Hernandez 2001; Scanell, Gifford 2010; Rollero, De Piccoli 2010; Devine-Wright, Clayton 2010). In the other side Lefebvre (1998) and Salama (2010) stated about the three variables in the making of the characters of place, which are social relationship, capital, and government.

Many studies about place theory focuses on the physical aspects (Cullen 1961; Morris 1979; Lynch 1981; Shirvany 1985; Koztof 1991; Zaydulfar 2002);

on the socio-cultural aspects (Norberg-Scultz 1979, 1986; Trancik 1986; Hayden 1995; Hanson, Hillier 1987; Piselli 2007; Pino, Hormazabal 2016); on the social-economic aspects (Lefebvre 1998); on the trancendental aspects (Rapoport 1983; Tjahyono 1989; Prijotomo 1992; Pangarsa 2006; Ronald 2005, 2012; Purwanto 2007; Santoso 2013; Triatmojo 2010, Suprapti 2016). Generally Kauman is a settled area in

“Javanese Cosmic City” around The Great Mosque built for santris and kyais and their relatives. Previous stud- ies on Kauman villages have been done in Yogjakarta (Mulyati 1995), Surakarta (Karsono 1996; Setyaningsih

Abstract. The introduction of new housing typologies in emerging cities is rooted in dynamics including infrastructural investments, urban growth rates and new development policies. In accommodating new lifestyles, demand-driven patterns by tenants and pro- perty owners are the main factors consolidating development trends in future. This paper explores the relationship between new lifestyle patterns and housing typologies in emerging cities. Within the context of Gulf cities, namely Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Manama, this paper investigates demographic structures and housing trends where a rapid phase of urban growth has transformed local urbanism. Current social structures were analysed by following a new ‘lifestyle framework’ resulting in the characterization of four main lifestyle trends. This is coupled with the assessment of 240 cases of new residences from the Gulf cities under study.

The juxtaposition of both studies offers an outlook relevant to the importance of a transition from supply-driven to demand-driven housing dynamics to accommodate emerging multicultural societies. The paper thus contributes to a better understanding and identification of the social groups that are currently lacking suitable housing.

Keywords: housing typologies, lifestyle trends, real estate, Gulf cities, urban transformation.

Introduction

Since the beginning of modern globalization cities have entered a fierce competition to attract investment in order to transform into key hubs within expand- ing networks. In 1976 Harvey Molotch described the new roles of cities as “growth machines” (Molotch 1976). While cities in highly industrialized countries benefited from already existing infrastructure, their large size and thus established local markets, cities in emerging countries needed to initiate new develop- ment strategies in order to attract urban growth since the end of the 20th century in order to compete. This growth resulted in rapid urbanization processes and the mass migration of new inhabitants. Subsequently, housing markets needed to react to rapidly increasing demand in various areas, from studio apartments for short-term stays to family dwellings and gentrifica- tion trends. While the demand-driven aspects can be regarded as rather restricted during the first years of urban growth, a diversification process of housing ty- pologies could be observed during the following peri-

od due to a more globalized and advanced real estate industry (Bardhan, Kroll 2007).

Various factors dictate the housing types preferred by migrant groups in emerging cities. This can be ob- served in cases of migrants from rural or urban places as well as migrants from various socioeconomic and sociocultural backgrounds (Salama 2015).
