Abstract
Background and Objective: Feedstuffs that serve as protein sources for ruminants are expensive. Jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.) is an indigenous legume grown in Indonesia, which is rich in protein ( . %), but is not used for protein supplementation in ruminants. This study on jack bean was conducted to improve its potential as a protein supplement for ruminants, jack beans were processed and evaluated for nutritional value and rumen fermentation characteristics. Methodology: Effects of no treatment (H ), compared to a roasting treatment (H ), an oven treatment (H ) and an extrusion treatment (H ) were investigated. Results: Heat processing techniques (H , H , H ) significantly (p< . ) increased dry matter, ash, crude fibre and crude protein (CP), but decreased ether extract. Comparison of CP concentrations under the different treatments indicated that jack beans treated with the H method had the highest CP ( . %). Rumen fermentation characteristics, including volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia (NH ) were significantly (p< . ) reduced by heat processing techniques (H , H , H ). However, rumen undegradable protein (RUP) was significantly (p< . ) increased. Jack beans treated with the H treatment had the highest RUP ( . %), although the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was not significantly different from jack beans in the control (H ) group. Non-communicable Diseases and its Association with Body Composition and Nutrition among General Population in Subnag Jaya, Selangor: Community-Based Study

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to measure the association between non- communicable diseases, body composition and nutrition among the general population of Subang Jaya, Malaysia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted using self-administered questionnaires with anthropometric measures and collection of blood pressure and glucose levels.
Results: Of the 518 respondents, the majority were female (60%), of Malay ethnicity (74.9%) and currently employed (59.7%). Most respondents had up to a secondary school education (45.9%) and exhibited a moderate ability to self-regulate their eating (65.1%). However, there was no association between dietary habits and development of hypertension (p = 0.368), diabetes mellitus (p = 0.5888), heart disease (p = 0.496), or cancer (p = 0.656) in this sample population. Most of our respondents had normal stress levels (69.5%) and there was no association with development of hypertension (p = 0.747), diabetes mellitus (p = 0.300), heart disease (p = 226), or cancer (p = 0.702). Conclusion:
Majority of respondents had normal stress levels and moderate self-regulation of eating. While there was an association between body fat percentage, visceral fat and diabetes status, no association was found between eating regulation behavior and both hypertension and diabetes.

Influence of Sports Participation, Knowledge, Attitude and Behavior Toward Vision Care on Vision Performance of Elementary School Students: A Comparison of Athletes and Non-athletes

Abstract: Objective: This study examined the visual performance of elementary school students in Taiwan by investigating knowledge, attitude and behavior toward vision care of students who participate and did not participate in athletics. Methodology: Variance and predictive analyses of relationships between vision performance and geographic variables as well as variables of knowledge, attitude and behavior toward vision care for 350 elementary school students in Taiwan were performed. Results: A significantly higher percentage of athletes who played non-ball games had normal vision than non-athletes. There were no significant differences in variables for visual knowledge, attitude and behavior toward vision care between athletes and non-athletes. Furthermore, when geographic variables were processed and analyzed with hierarchical regression, four intervals could be sequentially incorporated into the model to identify indicators of student’s visual performance.
The results of this analysis showed that geographic and variables of knowledge, attitude and behavior toward vision care did not predict student’s visual performance. Conclusion: Researchers recommend that school administrations promote vision care programs and outdoor activities to prevent vision loss.

Ability of Dwarf Elephant Grass (Pennisetum purpureum Cv. Mott) and Gliricidia sepium to Capture Ammonia (NH3) Around Chicken Cages: An in vitro Evaluation

Abstract: Background and Objective: Manure accumulation in open areas for long periods of time promotes the synthesis of ammonia (NH3) by microbes and its emission to the atmosphere. Forage plants are used as ammonia trapsin poultry farms. This study aims to evaluate the potential of planting dwarf elephant grass and Gliricidia sepium around poultry farms to trap ammonia. Methodology: This study used a complete randomized design with a 2×3 factorial pattern with 6 replications as follows:
Factor A: Two species (Dwarf elephant grass and Gliricidia sepium) and Factor B: The distance of the cages from the laying hen (1.5, 3 and 100 m). The parameters measured were the dry matter forage yield, plant height, protein content, ammonia concentration and in vitro dry matter digestibility.
Results: The dry matter production of dwarf elephant grass was higher than that of Gliricidia sepium (0.5 vs 0.24 kg pot–1), but for the other parameters, such as the plant height, protein content and dry matter digestibility, the values for Gliricidia sepium were higher than those for dwarf elephant grass.
Regarding the plant’s distance from the cage, a distance of 1.5 m yielded the highest levels of dry matter, forage yield, plant height, protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The ammonia concentration at the cage of the laying hen was 7.7 ppm and at a distance of 3 m was 0.88 ppm. Conclusion: Gliricidia sepium was effective at absorbing air borne NH3. Plants 1.5 m from the laying hen cage showed the best results.
