The Medical Sciences Program is one of the regional efforts of the Indiana University School of Medicine, located on the Bloomington campus. The program offers the first two years of the medical curriculum and, in addition, a combined M.D./Ph.D. The medical sciences program has just over three-quarters of a million dollars in sponsored projects, an indication of the scale of its research efforts.
At present, however, it is decidedly substandard, especially the animal rooms; one of the lecture rooms struck the visitors on the spot as a dangerous fire trap.

However, the investigation team notes the strained relationship between the chairman of the Department of Family Practice on the one hand and the chairs of the departments and the medical school on the other. Addressing the problems causing these strains will strengthen the department's training program. Each chief is also the chief of his subspecialty, not just in his own hospital, but also in each of the other two.

The department teaches all four undergraduate years and has developed an excellent review system that uses student input to modify courses and improve teaching skills. The Department of Psychiatry is currently geographically located on the outskirts of the Medical Center and the faculty is spread across all hospitals. The Department would like a more central location for the offices, and I would also like a greater percentage of the staff to be located in one place.
The impression of the survey team is that the department is an excellent one with a strong interest in undergraduate teaching.

Overall, the team's observations confirm the findings described in the Self-Study Task Force report.
