NEWS FROM THE DEAN'S OFFICE

Dr. M. K. Hine attended the Chicago Dental Society Meeting, Feb. 5-7, and presided as moderator of a panel discussion on periodontology.

On February 12th, Dr. Hine presented a paper for the Education and Supply Panel of the Health Manpower

Commission in Chicago, and February 14-15, he was in Washington, D. C.

attending the Program Planning

Committee of the National Institutes for Dental Research.

The Dean's Office has added Junaye Grant to their force and Mrs. Ruth Lochary is the new face in the Student Office, assisting Mrs.

PEDO SEMINAR

Doctors Darryl Harris, Jim Eastman and James Roche were guests at the Riley Dental Clinic on February 8 for·the first monthly private practice pedodontic seminar. Each presented a short lecture on

pedodontic practice management to the intern and resident staffs.

It is hoped that eventually each member of the Pedodontic Society of the state of Indiana will be able to visit the Riley Dental Clinic, and exchange philosophies and ideas with the staff members.

We would like to take this occasion to extend a belated, but no less warm, welcome to a newcomer in the graduate office, Mrs. Bettie Shaffer.

February 24, 1967 NATIONAL CHILD DENTAL HEALTH WEEK Dr. James Jinks, acting as 1967 chairman for-the Indianapolis District Dental Society's eleven- member committee for National Child Dental Health Week, reports that the period from February 5 - 11 was a time of activity and accomplishment.

Dr. Glen O. Sagraves coordinated dental health educational films in Indianapolis junior and senior high schools, visiting a total of 23

schools. I.D.D.S. members, 37-strong, participated in this program, giving short talks and answering questions for 5,472 students.

Dr. Victor Mercer of the dental division of the Indiana. State Board of Public Health, arranged for the examination of 17,000 second-grade students again this year, and 135 members of the I.D.D.S. visited 227 grade schools. This represents approximately 300 man hours of work.

Over 500 science fair kits were distributed to elementary, junior and senior high schools.

1\pproximately two hours of television time was donated by Channels 3, 4 and 8 for Child Dental Health Week.

DR. CHING PAYS VISIT

Dr. W. Ching, 1963 graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry and

graduate of the Riley Hospital pedodontic program, visited the Riley Clinic and the Dental School the week of February 6, after attendinB the Chicago Mid-Winter Meeting.

DR. DAVIS IN HAWAII

"Hospital Pedodontics for the

Handicapped Patient" was the subject of an address delivered by Dr. Bailey Davis to the Lacrosse District Dental Society on January 25th. Shortly after returning from his Wisconsin visit, Dr. Davis flew to Hawaii, where he spoke before both the Honolulu District Dental Society and the Hawaiian Orthodontic Society on the subjects of "Premedication and General Anesthetic," and r'Early Management of Pediatric Malocclusion."

DR. WEINBERG LECTURES

Dr. Bernard Weinberg, currently on leave to the National Institute of Dental Research, was a visitor on Thursday, February 9. At that time, he presented a lecture to the graduate students on, "Studies of Oral and Pharyngeal Function.11

CAPPED Capping ceremonies for the Dental Hygiene Class of 1968 were held at the Student Union Building on Sunday, January 22. Miss Joyce Worman, presi- dent of the Junior American Dental Hygienists' Association, served as mistress of ceremonies. Dean Maynard K. Hine spoke to the group and their parents on the subject, "The Fifth Point of the Compass." Following the program, a reception was held

for parents and students in the lounge.

DR. McDONALD SERVES WITH ADA COUNCIL Dr. Ralph E. McDonald was in Boston, Massachusetts on 1',ebrue.ry 16 and 17 to participate in an evaluation of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine which was made by the American Dental Association's Council on Dental

Education.

DR. CLARK IN DUO RECITAL

Several members of the faculty and assisting staff were privileged to attend the duo piano recital presented by Curtis V. Clark and David S.

Stokan at Jordan College of Music, Butler University on Monday, February 13th. Dr. Clark was graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry in

1964

and following his graduation, he served as a faculty member in the crown and bridge department.

DR. BAILEY PROMOTED

Dr. L. Rush Bailey has received notifi- cation from the Air Force Reserve that he has been promoted from Lt.

Colonel to Colonel. Dr. Bailey has been an active reservist for over 20 yea.rs, and is assigned to Dental

Services5 Office of the Surgeon General, Washington, D.

PARTICIPANTS IN CHICAGO MID-WINTER MEETING

Among the participants in the Chicago Mid-Winter Meeting were several

members of the prosthetics department.

Dr. David Jordan read a paper before the .American Prosthodontic Society

entitled, "Building on Poor Foundations. u Dr. Malcolm Boone presented a table

clinic on relining complete dentures and Dr. James House assisted Dr. Earl Pound in the presentation of a

telev-ision show.

DR. GIER NI' U. OF :MINNESOTA

On a recent visit to the University of Minnesota, Dr. Ronald E. Gier presented a talk entitled, uMedian Anterior

Alveolar Cleft and .Anachoretic Effect of Pulpitis."

DR. GILMORE SPEAKS IN CHICAGO

Dr. Wi11iam Gilmore recently attended an interim meeting of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators which was held at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, Illinois on February 3, 1967. Dr. Gilmore is Secretary-Treasurer of this

organization.

While in Chicago, Dr. Gilmore spoke to a number of groups including dental assistants, Loyola University students and members of the Chicago Dental Society-.

On February 15, he and Dr. Harold R.

Laswell presented a postgraduate course on pin-retained ~unal.gam

restorations at the Indiana University Fort Wayne regional campus.

ANNOUNCEMENT

DR. TCHALIAN PRESENTS TABLE CLINIC At the recent mid-winter meeting i:n Chicago, Dr. Tchalian presented a table clinic on the subject, "Cleft Lip and Palate and Maxillary Orthopedica."

On February 3 9 he attended the interim board of directors meeting of the American Academy of Maxillofacial

Prosthetics, and was re-elected for the third term s,s a member of the Hospital Accreditation and Membership

Committees.

On February 11, Dr. Tchalian presented a paper entitled~ "Head and Neck

Tumors and Maxillofacial Prosthetics"

to the first symposium. on Oral Cancer in Louisville, Kentucky. This was organized by the Louisville School of Medicine and sponsored by the National Cancer Control Center of the United States Public Health Service.

TELEVISION LINKS BLOOMINGTON AND MED. CENTER

Mr. Seymour Friedberg, director of the new Educational Resources Program at Indiana University Medical Center, has announced that the television link between the Bloomington Campus and the Medical Center is complete and will be rmt to use on a regular basis , al though interim equipment is being utilized at present. On April 1, a television link will be cc.,mpleted with the Purdue

campus and it will be possible to transmit programs from the Medical Center to any of Purdue's outlying centers. The video tape facility of our Television equipment will be used with the dental audio-visual students for self-critiquing of presentations.

This will be open to other dental school faculty at a later date.

FEBRUARY DATE LINES FOR PROFESSOR PHILLIPS

On :February 2, Prof. Phillips was in Toronto to attend a meeting of the Toronto Academy of Science. .Also, at that time, he spoke to the Toronto

chapter of the International Association for Dental Research.

On February 5, he presented a paper to the .American Academy of Restorative Dentistry at Chicago, and on February

he went to Vancouver where he lectured to the Vancouver District Dental Society.

On February 10, he attended a meeting of the reviewing committee for the Army Dental Research Program at Walter Reed Hospital~ Washington, D. C.

Dr. Phillips lectured to the Fifth District Dental Society, Johnson City, Tenn. on February 15 and 16, and on February 17, he participated in the program for Dental Students Conference on Research in Washington, D. C.
