Obituary

Published in the New York Times, July 28, 1989, Section A, Page 10 Daniel Rhodes, 78, Ceramic Sculptor, Dies.

Daniel Rhodes, a sculptor in ceramics and pottery who taught and wrote on the subject, died of a heart attack Sunday at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

He was 78 years old and lived in Swanton, Calif.

Mr. Rhodes was stricken while conducting a workshop at Sierra Nevada College.

From 1947 to 1973 he was a professor of ceramics at Alfred University in upstate New York. In the early 1970's he moved to California and taught at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

His work is in the collections of Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Kyoto Museum of Art in Japan and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, among other museums and galleries.

His first wife, Lillyan Rhodes, a painter and sculptor, died in 1986. He is survived by his second wife, the former Mary Beth Coulter; a son, Aaron, of Boston; a

daughter, Lorna, of Seattle; a brother, Tom, of Fallbrook, Calif., a sister, Rachel, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and three grandchildren.
