Journey greeted with open arms
by Pam Kooni
More thaiì 18,000 people waited impatiently for an event announced montha ago.
They ranged in agea from 16 to 30, from rock lovera to ballad lovera. Finally. at 8:45 p.m. last Wednesday night at Market Square Arena, their waiting waa over. Journey had arrìved.
The ©and waatéd no time in aatiafying thè audience'a wanta. Opening with "They Won't Take Me."
followed by "Line of Pire,"
(accompanied with fire works).
Journey had thè audience on ita feet. At leaat thoee who
wanted to rock, fìut for thoae preferring thè balla da, it waa not long before thè harmonic
"Open Arma" or "Don’t Stop Believin’ " fìlled thè concert hall. Journey wa8 able to handle thè tranaitiona between rock and tuli amoothly.
One reaaon for thè axnooth tranaitiona may be thè lead singer, Steve Perry. Never run- ning out of energy, Perry waa
over thè extra long ree stage. He introduced aonga, talk ed to (not at) thè audience, and kept thè ahow a pace flowing. Hia prancing, hia
swaying, hia rollicking never atopped. He ia defìnitely one of thè Setter ahowmen in thè buaineaa. But thè band ian't auccesafu) becauae of thè lead singer alone.
Journey ia blesaed with gifted inatru mentali sta. such as Neal Schon and Steve Smith.
Schon s guitar solo before thè fi rat encore number, "Lovin', Touchin , Squeexin ' sounded like a disturbed train, with long whinea and ghnda, but much approdated by thè audience.
Smith, on thè other hand, per- formed an impressi ve drum

Once again, some aonga were inaudible becauae thè sound System was cranked so high.
