I was especially pleased to see the picture of the Star Farmer of America and his eighteen month old boy on the cover of your December-January issue. With confidence that this publication will continue to grow, as I know it, not only in volume, but in the hearts of the.

Leslie Larson sums up his thoughts on 'Stilbosol' fortified supplements this way: "My experience with 'Stilbosol' over the past two years has been one of the cheapest and most profitable per day." 34;I have never had cattle come to market with the bottom these heifers wore, especially from the amount of feed they were getting.

One reason for these special taxes was to discourage the use of these transportation facilities in wartime. And in doing so, these taxes are undermining our public carriers—essential to peacetime commerce and vital to national defense.

The war ended more than a decade ago, but these taxes continue – and continue. They still add an extra 10 percent to the passenger fares you pay, and they add 3 percent to the freight costs on anything moved by public carriers like the railroads.

Local FFA chapters across the country will participate in special activities during National FFA Week, February 16-23, to attract the public's attention and. The "kick off" for the week's activities will be a special radio broadcast with National FFA President John Haid. John, who will be traveling with the other national FFA officers on their annual GoodWillTour, will break away from the group and fly to Chicago on February 16 to appear with Everett Mitchell on NBC's National Farm and.

Many radio and television programs, as well as special editions of local newspapers, will feature Future Farmers during this week. Window displays, posters, special school assemblies and civic club programs, parent-son banquets and vocational agriculture "open houses" are just a few of the methods used by local chapters to promote the organization during FFA Week. For several years prior to that time, there had been an observance of "FFA Day" during the time of the national convention.

When the officers and delegates decided to give more emphasis to the program, they chose the week of George Washington's birthday as National FFA Week. 1958, Washington's birthday will fall on a Saturday rather than in the middle of FFA week as usual.

He had to sell 61 hogs at $10.35 per hundredweight because of low hog prices in the fall and winter. He is currently president of his local Young Iarmcrs class and chairman of the membership committee. In search of the right answer, we turned to four National FFA Dairy Farming award winners.

You have to keep in mind that dairy farming requires long hours, but not necessarily extremely hard work.'. Danny Bird's father operates a dairy factory, but also represents his district in the Senate, so he is away from home much of the time. The dairy winners used artificial insemination and others used a herd animal, but all emphasized the need to use the very best bull available.

Fortunately for them, three of the dairy winners have either partnered with their fathers or are considering some form of partnership arrangement. It is important to build up soil fertility in order to run a successful dairy operation.

If they are made of wood, they must have a diameter of at least 2U to 10 cm and a length of b'/i to 2 meters. The depth to which they should be placed in the ground is 2 to 2Vi feet for wooden posts, and 1 foot for steel posts; although some rec-. Staples hold up better when placed diagonally. provide more support and add strength to the fence.

At the end of each roll of wire with 20 rods in uneven ground and every 40 rods if it is. wooden poles, you should install a grounding device approximately every 50 poles for lightning protection. They shrink to half their normal size. and you can put up a fence yourself. almost cut their costs in half. Be persistent when calculating costs. consider how long the fence will be in use.

If you use the best wire and the best post, your fence can last about 20 years, even though the cost is not double. For pigs, place a strand two inches below the bottom of the fence. some areas, fencing contractors will do the complete job for a set price.

The Model 60 hitch is easily set to a direct drag position for transport, or to an offset position for field work. They participated in one of the first farms. air tours ever held in Ohio on a county basis as part of their study of farm management. These tours were offered by the seven vocational agricultural departments of the country and included both the large and young farmer groups.

He met with the vo-ag teachers several times to make plans and secure the planes. Each plane could carry three students. tours were designed to include examples of soil conservation practices and watershed projects established with the help of the Fairfield County Soil Conservation Service. These images will later be used in farm management. and continued throughout the day, with the last run ending around 5:00 p.m.

No one was required to attend the tour, but most students took advantage of the opportunity. The teachers went on the first trip to familiarize the pilots with the area and the special sights they wanted their students to see.

Mention the FFA in Ward County, North Dakota, and people think of the three Haugeberg brothers. Haugeberg of Max, North Dakota, they are outstanding members of the Minot FFA Chap-. When each of the brothers signed up for vocational agriculture, it took some family planning to provide them with projects.

A good example was one December afternoon in 1950, when the family held a conference to discuss how. All brothers include beef cattle in their farming programs and own a purebred bull. Offices Carl has held in FFA include chapter secretary and North Dakota FFA president and secretary.

In one set the birds disappeared into the thicket to seek shelter from the cold wind rushing through the willows on the stream, then came up the hill to walk among them. A soft chatter could be heard for a few minutes as they settled in the warm grass, then it fell silent as each weary bird found its place in the roost circle. Soon a large lynx with fierce eyes and a scarred face came to the side of the valley and.

To man he was an outlaw because of his habit of plundering pigpens and chicken coops. To the animals in the forest he was an outlaw because he killed more than he needed in food. For several minutes he sat at the edge of the bush, searching the wind with his nose.

This rig plants cotton and applies Du Pont Karmex'DL to control weeds so that the cotton can grow with less hoeing. 34; Karmex' is another example of how Du Pont chemistry helps the American farmer do his job better and easier.

When sprayed on the ground at the same time as cotton is planted, it controls weeds for up to eight weeks and saves up to four hoes. Everything could have gone well for the cat if it weren't for the wind. It was only for a moment, but that was enough for the deer to pick up on the cat's hateful scent.

Carefully she maneuvered him into a position behind the other doe, then stood behind him.

In less than three minutes he was gone from the top, leaving behind him a great silence that would not be broken by the delighted squeals of the four collie puppies. Only death would stop her, and killing her was beyond the power of the bobtail outlaw. She was so close to him that he heard the gnashing of her teeth as he jumped to the top of the pole.

The sow raged back and forth right inside, tearing at the wire and throwing her weight against it, but. She had been back to her master's house where she had found plenty of food waiting for her. The collie was almost at her bedside before she caught the scent of outlaw.

There was the same anger in her that made the sow throw herself against the fence. Expecting her to circle and go quiet as he had seen the other dogs do, he cocked his ears and growled as she approached.
