The group visited the National Farm Medicine Center, located just eight miles from Spencerin Marshfield. Members from the Bowdle, South Dakota and Spencer, Wisconsin, FFA chapters toured the Land O'Lakes cheese factory in Spencer under an interstate chapter officer. Betty Klepper. plant physiologist and Dr. Ron Rickman, soil scientist, led the plant growth and development section where students learned how wheat plants develop.
Richard Smiley taught a session on plant pathology where they learned about plant diseases and their impact agriculture. This project was more difficult because the cemetery had been neglected until recently when the chapter began the project. The students were each given a packet containing different types of trees. The members also got Assemblyman Paul Tonko and State Agency Commissioner Richard McGuire.
A man in the crowd suggested that their state secede from the national organization. It was more frustrations than threats, but he still said they were breaking away. I know. I was there. Eighteen out of nineteen constitutional amendments were passed by the voting delegates, sending the winds of change across our organization. The one failed amendment.
