Hibernating in the winter may be okay for bears, but it certainly doesn't sit well with Irving Stewart, owner of an 80-acre farm in Warroad, Minn. Barron has been responsible for the tremendous growth of The National FUTURE FARMER over the past five years. Barron was called to the state office where he served as Assistant State Supervisor of Commercial Agriculture and later State Supervisor and State FFA Advisor.
He also edited The Texas FutureFarmer which no doubt sparked his interest in the publishing field. I am a junior this year and an FFA member of the Pine Knot, Kentucky, High School. I have been very close to the FFA in recent years and have just graduated.
Your magazine has done a remarkable job in promoting interest in the organization in the short time it has been published. Chances are good that young Hank Wehrman will one day return to the farm to continue raising top quality pigs for the market and the show ring. CLARENCE CHAPPELL
HOW MANY 21-YEAR-OLD
Clarence and his wife, Annie Lou, are shown in front of the new brick house. Chappel, Sr., had a successful farm at the time and was willing to help his son get the start that led to full-time farming. Tunnell, his vocational agriculture instructor, worked together to develop a business arrangement where Clarence could use land and machinery on the home farm.
Young Chappell started with 5 hectares of corn, 75 percent interest in 5 dairy cattle and 50 percent interest in 5 hectares of soybeans, 6 beef cattle and 4 breeding sows. The money he earned from his projects, plus borrowed money, was used by Clarence to expand his program each year. After four years in vocational farming, Clarence's records showed that total labor income from his supervised farming program was $22,100.
After graduating from high school, he received a fourth interest, valued at $12,000, in the house. He served one year as reporter, secretary and president of the Perquimans County FFA Chapter, was a reporter for the federation FFA for one year, and. He was a class officer during each of his years in high school, an honor student, and served as his assistant superintendent.
He is at present secretary of the Perquimans County Farm Bureau and treasurer of the Guernsey County Cattle Club.
THE 30TH NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION
Members are selected by mail and receive only a day or two of practice before performing at the Convention. Donor representatives of the FFA Foundation were guests of the platform during the evening program where the awards were presented. In the center right photo are two visitors from Japan They are Masaru Takahashi, President, Future Farmers O'.
The national finals in several FFA competitions are an important part of the convention. Jack Timmons talks to these young men who participated in the international youth exchange. On the left, FFA members who went to Great Britain last summer; right, British young farmers who came to America.
They are made possible by the Future Farmers of America Foundation, Inc. and range up to a $1,000 check to Star American Farmer. In this photo, we see 363 FFA members receiving the organization's top star farmers: from left, Bryan Hafen, Diploma of Achievement, that American Farmer. In Nevada, they are literally one; Clarence Chappell, Northern Thousand, as only one FFA member in a thousand is eligible to do so.
One hundred twenty-six local chapters were honored in the organization's National Chapter Award Program. Over the years, Conrad added to his thoroughbred streak and became known throughout California for his success on the show network. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in June this year and returned to the home farm to take his place as one of the managing members.
Jacob dropped out of college after completing the first semester of his senior year and enlisted in the Armed Forces. Then he will take his place with the other members of the family in the dairy business. The three Andresen brothers' progress from greenhand to American Farmer follows a similar pattern.

This is an amazing number compared to the 50 cows that a bull can normally breed per year by natural service. It is conceivable that an average of 50,000 or more cows can be bred annually from one bull, although 29.5 percent of American dairy cows were artificially bred last year, more than 40 percent of England's cows and nearly 80 percent of Denmark's cows were bred artificially. It points to the enormous responsibility that breed societies and associations and their sire committees have in the future development of our dairy industry.
While visiting Denmark, he recognized the possibilities of artificial insemination and organized the first artificial insemination cooperative in New Jersey in 1938. They discovered that the addition of glycerin to sperm made it possible to preserve spermatozoa by freezing.
