Teacher Corps community centered

Better education for the young of fenders is the goal of a proposal which has been developed by the Indians Univensty Teacher Corps and the Indiana Department of Corrections The proposal advocates state certifi cation of teacher training programs for teachers in settings such as cor rational institutions or alternative programs If approved, the certifica tion will be the first of its kind in the nation

According to Teacher Corpa. which is a Federally-funded program in the I U School of Education in Indiana polls, a major purpose of education is to help the young develop into re

Dr Arthur Bnil, director of the Teacher Ctarpa Program, contends

“The young offender has not been reached by the regular process of edu cation, therefore, education has not achieved one of its major purposes "

Results of a IfTi survey by Anne Patterson, director of the Office of Teacher Education and Certification, show that no stales have specific certification requirements for cor

rectional institution taachers Because of the lack of correctional training programs, the Teacher Carps proposal stales ' education dis criminates against teachers in cor rational settings. and more importantly, the students who are taught ui these settings “

Education in correctional institu

According to Fred Kakas, an in

If all goes well, the I U School of Education then can set up a proposed curriculum which also must be ap

One student stteodsd the meeting el the committee which is assigned the re

For a start. Circle City Circuit, the free fUm series, intramural athletics, the Saga mere and the student government Just to name a few With as much parti dpetioo as witnessed by the committee, it would net be loo surprising to have ah student activities programs cancelled for lack of interest

Yet we know there is interest in student activity programs but we cannot figure out why there were not more students there Many students complain about the university takii* action on somethin which affects them and they supposedly do not know anything about it An example of student non participation can be drawn from the Student Fee Committee meetings of last year When the com mittee held open meetings students were kteraUy rounded up from the hslk so the committee could hear student opinions And people complain about not hav ingaaay?

However students feel, think or believe coocenm* student life, the forum is available for them to give their opinions Make use of it. folks, or eventually the decisions will be made for you here at the university, the country, and quite poo

Parking predicaments

Recently, half of the red lot acmes Michigan Street from the Blake Street Li

brary was turned into s green lot Shortly thereafter, a free lot across from it was roped off. with instructions for police to tow any cars that continued to park there

The red lot became green to expand the parting facilities for University Hospital The free lot was closed because Physical Plant was having s hard time getting to materials it had stored there Humph

It seems that as soon as students discover s kit that's dose to campus or docen t require e sticker, the university either limits parking or stops it altogether-a frustrating if not maddening situation

Croon administration, give us poor red-stickered folk a break At the rate things are going. we'U soon need those shuttle buaca just to get to the parking lots

Bogar explains position of SLA search comm.

To the Editor

Your readers may be interested in some of the background concerning the appointment of a studnt re

presentative to the Search and Screen Committee, Dean. School of Liberal Arts The selection of the student is primarily the responsibility of the Stu dent Association, the only quail fcatton is that the student be s major in the School of Liberal Arts 1 told President Komakech of this quail Acation after the first student who came to talk to me about the position happened to be s major in the School of Engineering and Technology

Mr John Emfoy was than sent, I bn ifove, by the Student Association to talk to me about the position and after discussing the position and Mr Emfoy's background it was my under standing he was in the process of transferring to the School of Educe Hon I told Mr Emfoy that the Com mittee was tolerated in someone who would have s continuing interest m the School of Liberal Arts and there fore the Studeot Association should pick someone else 1 apologise to Mr Emfoy If he felt there was any ban tihty directed toward him by me I understand Mr Emfoy m an excellent studeot and interested to the adminis

President Komakech indicated to me that the Student Aaaociation has several fine candidates for the pom Uon Hopefully, the student seat on the committee wtO be Ailed shortly

A new hotel?

No, but welcome to the Med Center’s Krannert Pavilion

by Jim Mey

As I drove up to the Medical Center and parked my car, I realised that I knew very Uttie about Krannert Pavilion, that strange and mysterious sixth floor of University Hospital

I walked around to the west aide of the hospital where the private en

Eli Lilly, and such locally wetl4nown figures as Jim Garrard and Governor Otis

I glanced around the reception roomand was rather awed by the brightly lit with modern gaidceUiqg lights, tte floor covered by s beeutiful
