:COLEOPTEROLOGICAL NOTES FOR THE YEAR 1886. Cychrusstenostomus was found several times under fungi where, I suppose, it hadstationed itselfinorderto feed upontheinsectsinhabiting the fungus.

Mr. Smith
called attention to a peculiarity observedby him
in the
antenna
of Cressonia juglandis.They
have in the maletwo
branchesto each side of eachjoint, preciselyas inthe Satur-niidaj. This feature isuniqueintheSphingidaeof
North America
;nor did he
know
ofitsoccurrence in exotic genera.He empha-
sized the relation of the Smerinthidsto the
Bombycids,

thoughthe venation of the
wings
and the larvae are essentially sphingiform.*Mr. Smith
also stated thathehad
foundthatamong
the insectsusually
named Euerysthia phasma, two
specieswere embraced which

remarkson

species of Callimorpha. Inarrangingthe material of theU.

Museum

to the conclusion, from a study of theseries ofCallimorpha
inthe collection, thatmost of those formsnow marked as varieties were
really good
species. He

female beetle (or both sexes ?) constructsunderthe bark of thetrunka ratherlarge, roundor ovalcentral chamber, fromwhich
from threetofivelong and slightly undulating gallerieslead off invariousdirections, but usuallymore
orlessupwards
ordownwards. The
larval galleries donot presentanyparticularfeatures, butare rathershorter thanin allied species. Allthese galleries are
more
within the bark than in the outermostlayer ofwood.
