NOTE ON SOME FOREIGN GRASSES.
The
cultivatedsorghums and
their allies have been included in the genusAndropogon
orhave beensegregatedasadistinct genus under thename Sorghum
ofPersoon.The
groupappearsto beofgenericrank but underthemethod
of establishing type species for genera, thename
for the group should beHolcus instead of Sorghum.The
type species of Linn?eus' genus Holcus is evidently his Holcus sorghum,* consequently thisname
should be retained for the group which contains Holcus sorghum, ifthisgroup be recognizedas distinctfrom Andropogon.Under
the title"Andropogon
halepensisand Andropogon
sorghum,"Piperthasrecently discussed thesespecies
and
has describedseveralnew
subspecies.
The
specimens submitted bythe Office of Seedand
Plant Introduction belong to the following subspecies as recognized under Holcus:Holcus
halepensis L., including the awnless form (Andropogon halepensis anatherus Piper).Holcus
