Case 3 Walmart
1. Do you think Wal-Mart is doing enough to become more sustainable?
Yes, I do believe Wal-Mart is doing enough to become more sustainable. Wal-Mart is one of the most powerful companies internationally. As with all things that come with power, Wal-Mart’s business practices are examined thoroughly. This includes their relationships with suppliers, employees, consumers, and the environment. Wal-Mart has applied many new ways of getting energy to their other stores. They also regulate electricity usage in their stores based on a daylight dimming system. They adjust the input of electricity in lighting based on the natural light. They also are making efforts to regulate their heating and cooling system.
2. What are the problems that Walmart has faced, and what has the company done to address them?
The company has historically received plenty of criticism regarding its treatment of employees, suppliers, and economic impacts on communities. Feminists, activists, and labor union leaders have all voiced their beliefs that Wal-Mart has engaged in misconduct in order to provide low prices.
However, Wal-Mart has been turning over a new leaf. New emphases on diversity, charitable giving, and sustainability have contributed to Wal-Mart’s new image. Walmart has taken sustainability policy for being a greener company to address its environmental stakeholders. The company has taken environmental leadership policy to achieve sustainability objectives.
3. Why has Walmart tended to improve performance while other retail outlets have been suffering financially?
I think that one of the biggest factors in Wal-Mart’s improved performance while other retailers are suffering financially is Walmart's everyday low prices strategy along with the position they take about their customers. Walmart also encourages store managers to compare with other competitors to ensure Walmart is offering low prices.
Case 4 BP
1) What aspects of BP's ethical culture could have contributed to the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster? BP did not place safety and security as a priority in their drilling activities. Due to them wanting to minimize on risk management strategy costs, they neglected the safety measurements. the working environment of BP has the characteristic that is resistant to changes even though the company had been sued for many times. The management did not set or consistently reinforce on safety procedures,
2) Did BP engage in purposeful avoidance of risk management?
From reading the case I will have to say yes because BP has every chance to avoid the risk that cause so many of these people there life and cause injury among which are their employee.

For example take a look at the huge explosion that occurred in march 2005 at the BP oil refinery in Texas that killed 15 employees and injured another 170 people, which was the result of a leak of hydrocarbon liquid and vapor that was ignited, this could have been easily avoided if BP has follow the several procedures required to ensure the safety of the process which was cover by the law of Clean Air Act for ensuring mechanical integrity and safe startup between 1999 until the explosive in 2005, and to top that even after they see to repair their company by adding some ethical code of conduct, in 2010 it was discovered this problem was not corrected, there was still the safety problems that were discover in 2005.
3) What should BP do in the future to rebuild its reputation and manage the risks associated with offshore drilling activities?
REBUILD REPUTATION: Safety stakeholders. Increase company social responsibility. Rectify all problems faced previously. Build high level of ethical culture.
RISK MANAGEMENT: Prepare more adequate and accurate safety/contingency plan. Do
preventive actions on all possible factors that can lead to a disaster. Conduct safety evaluations at least annually.
