is con- tinued to the postfrontal crest. Superior orbital margin sinuous, advanced in its middle portion. Postorbital tooth acute, prominent.Lateral branchial spinesthree. Inoneofthe

Carapace about four- fifths as long as broad, convexlongitudinally, postero-lateral margins long, sloping slightly inward
and
backward, antero-lateral margins arcuate.The
cardiac regionand
the posterior portion of the gastric region are outlinedby
shallow depressions.Front aboutone-thirdthewidth of thecarapace,,advanced, two-lobed, lobesseparated

orbits:
granulous. Orbits well-defined, the iouter angle a sharp incurved spine. There are
two
protogastriclobes,little elevatedand
often not discernible, exceptby two
transverselines of a lightercolor.A
very shallowmedian
groove extendsbackward
fromthe frontalmarginand
forks directlybehind the protogastric lobes.The
postfrontal crest,when
present,is short, arcuate,tuberculous,and
indistinct. Itbegins back ofthe corneaand
for a short distanceis nearly straight, directed outwardand
slightlyfbrward, thencurvesalmostparallel totheantero- lateral margin. In most specimens, however, the crest is obsolete, indicated onlyby
the smoothly-rounded elevation behind the oi'bit,Antero-lateral margin with a
row

spines areirregularin sizeand

the anteriorbranchial region are 5 ormore
mar- ginal s])ines separatedby
a space from the hepatic spines: theanterioris
by
far the larger,and
is sometimes bifid.The
others decrease in lengthposteriorly.The
suborbital margin is granulous excei)t at the notch beneath the postorbital si)ine. The abdomen
of the female covers the sternum.PROCEEDIXGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM. 27
Chelipeds in tbe female unequal.
The
margins of the lueinis are spiualous, theupper margin with a sharp spine near the carpus, the inner surface tuberculous at its base, the lower surface with a trans- verse tuberculous ridge atits distal end.The
carpus hastwo
strong spines on its inner margin, and
arow
of about 7 smaller spines on the anteriormargin, two
ofwhich areclosetothecondjdeof tliemanus
and are separatedby
a wide interval from the remaining spines.Sometimes oneof the spinesis biiid,
and
occasionally additional spin- ules occur on the upper surface behind the marginal spines. The manus
is slightly swollen, with a convex lower marginand
almost straightupper margin, which sometimes in the smallerchelii)ed has a snuiUsharp spineat the distal end; in a few specimens there areone or two spines at the proximal end. Fingers irregularly dentate on their i>rehensileedgesand
slightly gaping.The
ambulatory legsare ratherbroad, flattened; meraljointswithtwo
spines at thedistalend;carpal
and
propodal jointsstrongly spined above; carpaljoints withdistalspines in the first pair
and
often in the secondand
third pairs;propodaljoints with a few spines below; dactyli with four rows of spines.
