possibly the exception of Messrs. Sclaterand Salvin's report on Mr. C. Buckley'scollection ofBo- livianbirds,* Mr. Allen's "List ofthe Birds collected in Bolivia by Dr.

The

collection was

made

during theyears 1SS5and 18S6 byDr. II II

Rusby, "the well-known botanist,"

who "made

ajourneydiagonallyacro.-s

northern Bolivia,starting atAricain Chili and proceedingthence north- eastwardtothe headwaters of theRio Madeira, and thence

down

thisriver tothe northern border of Bolivia."

The number

ofspecimenswas about 400, representing 267 species,about125 ofwhich are addedto the list of previously

known

Bolivian birds, while no less than 13 are apparently

new

to science.

A

completelistof the speciesis given,with critical anno- tations

when

they

seem

called for, while Dr. Rusby's very interesting field-notes are givenin bracketsandarefollowed bythe initial 'R\

The new

species and subspecies described are the following:

Em-

pidonax boliviaxus, Cliiroxiphia pareola boliviano., Unicornis stria/a, Leptasthemirafnscescens,Leptasthcnurafuliginiceps boliviano.,Synallaxis griseiventris, Anabazenops immacnlatus, Picolaptes ob/ect/es,* A/yrmo- chanes (gen. nov.) //vpo/eucus,

Conopophaga

rnsbyi, P/ilogopsis notata, and Scvtalopus bolivianus.

The

annotatedspecies are the following:Atticora cyanolciica

montana

Baird, thesubspecificcharacters originally ascribedtowhich are distinctly seen in the Bolivian bird; Ccerebacienilea(Linn.), Bolivianspecimens ofwhich

"have

the bill very short and slender, shorterand smaller even than Bogota specimens .... labelled Ccerebaccerulea microrkyncha by Berlepsch";

Eupkonia

laniirostris Lafr.

&

D'Orb.,which differs "from Bogota specimens {E.crasstrostris Scl.) in havingthebill

much

smaller,

theyellowof thecap

much

deeper (orange yellow),"and in other partic- ulars; Paroaria gulariscervicalis (Scl.),P.cervicalisScl. being'•doubt- lessonlya local form of P.gularis" towhich Mr. Allen thinks /'.copi- tata (D'Orb.

&

Lafr.) also probablyreferablein the

same manner;

Pac/iy-

rhamphus

niger Spix,a specimenof which"is

much

blacker below, with lesswhite onthe scapulars, wings, andtail thaninBrazilian and

Cayenne

birds"; Lathria

plumbea

(Licht.), if not L. cinerea (Vieill.). which Mr.

Allen regards as doubtfully separable; Cinclodes rivularis (Cab.), the complicated

synonymy

of which is disentangled; Formicarius anaIis (Lafr.

&

D'Orb.), a specimen ofwhich agrees essentially with the type;

Pteroptochos albifrons Landb., which Mr. Allen regards,and

we

believe correctly, as a

"'good

species,'or at least as notreferable to 6'. magel-

faniens"'; Hvlactes castaueus Phil.

&

Landb., the

young

of which i->

described;

Trogon

collaris Vieill., a male ofwhich is described; Gal- balcyrhynckus leucotis

Des

Murs, the single specimen having the bill

"about 7

mm.

longer thanthe

maximum

given by Sclater in his

mono-

graph of the family."
